Lady Vikings Do Well at D-4 State Meet

A contingent of members of the Winthrop High girls track and field team turned in strong performances at this past weekend’s Division 4 State Meet.

Lexi Vaccaro was the top performer for the Lady Vikings, bringing home a fourth place ribbon in the 200 meter dash in a time of 27.51. Lexi had qualified for the finals with a fourth place finish in the preliminaries with a clocking of 27.55. Her performance earned her a ticket to the All-State Meet this week at Fitchburg State College. Vaccaro also competed in the triple jump where she finished in 14th place with a final landing of 31-9.5.

Teammate Amy Sena came home with a sixth place ribbon for her performance in the 400 meter low hurdles in a time of 69.69. Alyssa Mackey also put a point onto the Winthrop scoresheet with an eighth place effort in the long jump with a leap of 16-3. Ashley Jurovich completed the Winthrop scoring on the day with her eighth place throw in the shotput at a distance of 31-.75. Ashley also competed in the discus and finished in 16th spot with a toss of 81-8.

Other Lady Vikings who competed in the meet were Carly O’Keefe, with a 16th place finish in the 100 meter high hurdles in 17.81; Julia Wallace and Sena in the high jump; and the 4 x 100 relay team of Alyssa Mackey, Mayomi Meggison, Amy Sena, and Lexi Vaccaro who finished in 16th place with a clocking of 53.86.

“It was a fantastic day,” said WHS head coach Warren MacPhail. “Our goal was to compete hard and improve on all seeded placements. ‘Grab a top 10′” was the theme of the day, which we did, highlighted by Lexi Vaccaro passing eight seeds to gain an all-state spot for this week’s meet at Fitchburg State College on Saturday.It was a fun day.”

Gallo, Roman compete at D-4 boys state meet

Two Viking freshman boys competed at last weekend’s Division 4 State track meet.

Anthony Gallo was only one of two freshmen to qualify for the boys 200 meter dash out of the 33 who made it. Anthony turned n a strong effort in a time of 25.06.

Jorge Roman was one of only three freshmen to qualify for the 100 meter dash  Although Jorge had been coming off an injury, “He worked hard to make it to States and, like Anthony, he also ran a good race in a time of 12.29,” said WHS head coach Mark D’Amico.
