Go Vikings: Softball Team Chasing a State Title

The Winthrop High spring sports season is not quite over yet, as the Lady Viking softball team meets Matignon today (Thursday) in the Division 3 North semifinals at Martin Field in Lowell.

We remember when a young coach, David Guffey, a former Winthrop football and track standout, took over the softball program a decade ago and predicted that brighter days would be ahead. His first team had little success (they were winless), but through a combination of hard work and dedicated players, the program is now one of the most respected on the North Shore.

This year’s team has a chance to move on and compete for the state championship. We wish them well and we know that regardless of the outcome, Coach Guffey and his crew will be a credit to their school and their community.
