Basketball Time: Winthrop’s Rich Summer Hoop Tradition

You know it’s summer when the area’s best basketball commissioners, Peter Grimes and Phil Lundberg, are preparing to start the new season at the McKenna Courts. It’s an annual rite of summer in Winthrop for outdoor basketball to be played in the center of our town. It’s a fun and competitive environment for adult and high school players. Winthrop head coach David Brown would probably tell you that having his players competing in the Winthrop league against such challenging competition was a good way to prepare for the 2011 season that ended in a state championship on the famed parquet floor at the TD Garden.

Thank you, Peter and Phil, for maintaining this great summertime tradition that spans five decades in Winthrop and for running such a well-organized league for the enjoyment of basketball players and spectators.
