The Winthrop High girls track team defeated Lynn Classical by a close score of 70-61 last Thursday. “Classical is a much improved and well coached team,” said WHS head coach Warren MacPhail “and they have the best javelin throwers, sprinters, and jumpers in the conference.”
The Lady Vikings were led by eighth by graders Carly O’Keefe (first in the 400 hurdles in 1:16 and second in the 100 hurdles 18.1) and Amy Sena (first in the mile in 6:23 and second in the 400 in 69.0).
Mayomi Meggison also had a very big day for Winthrop, taking first in the high jump with a leap of 4-10, second in the long jump with a performance of 15-9, and another second in the 100 dash in 13.2.
Christina Russo and Alyssa Mackey continue their strong performances in the 200, finishing 1-2 in times of 27.2 and 28.1. However, the two mile run proved to be the turning point of the meet with Kaitlyn Hershey, Michaela McCarthy, and Alessandra Scorzella sweeping the event for Winthrop in times of 13:43, 16:01, and 16:16 respectively.
Laureen LoPresti continued her terrific senior year with a first place in the discus with a toss of 79-0. Jordan Griffiths had solid day with a first in the 800 in 2:52 and a third in the 400 hurdles in 1:18. Maria Rago grabbed a third in the 800 in 3:01.
Julia Wallace took third in the high jump with a leap of 4-9. Liz Anderson had a huge day in both the shotput and the discus, placing second with a shotput toss of 26-3 and third with a discus throw of 62-0.
Alexis and Gina Guiliano had great days with triple jumps of 31-9 and 30-9, both of which were personal records (PR). Corey Charvis and Mia Simonetti ran well in the mile with times of 6:43 and 6:45.
In addition, added MacPhail, “The Jones twins made strong contributions in the 100, 200, long jump, and discus, showing they could be the future of Winthrop girls track.”
