A Special Award – Trophy Recalls Efforts of Bill Rutherford

The photos of the Winthrop High football banquet appeared in last week’s Sun-Transcript and we understand it was another great evening hosted by head coach Sean Driscoll, the football parents, and the football program.

One of the major awards is given to the MVP of the annual Thanksgiving game and this year’s recipients were J.P. Doherty and Nick McCarthy. The full name of the award is the Bill Rutherford Memorial Thanksgiving MVP award.

We remember Mr. Rutherford as a much-respected leader in the sport community, especially in Winthrop Youth Hockey where he helped many young athletes advance their joy of playing the sport. The Rutherfords generously have donated an award every year and it truly carries on the wonderful legacy of Mr. Rutherford.

We wish to thank the family on behalf of the WHS football program for continuing to sponsor this prestigious honor. We’re sure the recipients of this award join us in thanking the Rutherford family.
