Fucillo sets new school mark in javelin

Jenny Fucillo will be remembered for many of her exploits on the track when she unties the laces on her cleats for the final time as a Winthrop High Lady Viking a few weeks hence.

But she added yet another mention of her name in the WHS record books when she set a school record in the javelin with a toss of 69 feet in Monday’s meet with Saugus.

The record spear throw came on the heels of yet another double victory by the senior hurdler supreme, as she captured the 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of 67 seconds and the100 high hurdles in 16.7 seconds.

A number of her Lady Viking teammates also turned in excellent performances in the meet that saw Saugus edge Winthrop by the closest of margins, 69-68.

Cortney Nolan sped to first place in the 100 meter dash in 13.23. Jordan Griffiths captured the mile run in 5:46, a new personal record (PR) for Jordan.

Christina Russo earned two second place finishes in the 200 in 27.9 and the javelin with a toss of 60 feet. Gina Guiliano also placed six points onto the Winthrop scoresheet with second place efforts in the triple jump with a landing of 29-1 and in the 800 in 2:45.

Alyssa Mackey contributed a second place in the long jump with a leap of 13-8 and a third place in the 200 in 28.6. Jessica Dowson also scored four points with a second in the 100 hurdles in 18.9, a PR for Jessica, and a third in the 400 hurdles in 77.0.

Alyssa Moore added a point for the Winthrop cause with a third in the 100 dash in 14.1;

Maria Rago lowered her PR in the 800 meters to 2:47, which gave her a third place finish; Julia Wallace took second in the high jump with a leap of 4-6; teammate Renee LoPresti finished third in the high jump with a jump of 4-4; Kaitlyn Hersey lowered her two mile time to 13:34 for a second place effort; and Nicole O’Brian finished third in the mile with a clocking of 6:27.

Coach Warren MacPhail and his crew will compete in the Northeastern Conference Meet Saturday at the Manning Bowl in Lynn.
