Lady Bulldogs eliminated in tourney opening round

The Winthrop/Lynn/Revere Lady Bulldogs hockey team bowed out of the MIAA Division 1 North sectional tournament with a 4-0 loss to Arlington Catholic in a preliminary round contest played at Larsen Arena last Wednesday evening.

“Arlington Catholic is a very good team,” said WHS head coach Anthony Martucci . “We didn’t play our best and in the tourney, you need your best effort in every game because every opponent will be a good one.”

AC, which was seeded 20th in the 27 team North bracket with an 11-7-2 regular season record, poured 44 shots on 7th grade Lady Bulldog netminder Katie Burt. “Katie was phenomenal,” said Martucci. “She did a great job keeping us in the game.

“Our big problem was that we could not execute on offense,”continued Martucci, whose team was seeded 13th with a 9-3-6 mark. “We needed a spark to get us going, but never caught it.”

The contest marked the final game in a Lady Bulldog uniform for seniors Lindsey Barker, Rachel Mailhiot, and Kelly Devenney. “They were great leaders for us, both on and off the ice,” said the coach. “They did whatever they were asked to do and made tremendous contributions to the development of this program. They will be sorely missed.

“To be sure, the loss was a disappointing way to end the year,” added Martucci, “but we had a great season and this was a great group of girls. They have a lot to be proud of.”

The team will hold its annual awards and break up banquet within the next few weeks which is sure to be a celebration both of the past season’s accomplishments and the promise of the next one.
