Howard, Doonan lead the way for grapplers

The Winthrop and Saugus Coop wrestling team, a/k/a Chaos Wrestling, has undertaken another busy season under the direction of coach Rudy Howard.

Leading the Chaos is senior captain Christian Howard, who sports a fine 10-3 record wrestling at 140 pounds. All 10 of Christian’s victories have been pins, while two of his losses have come against two of the top rated wrestlers in Eastern Mass.

Junior Nick Doonan, a co-captain who wrestles at 189 pounds, has built upon a fine sophomore season and presently stands at 8-4 against his opponents.

Howard has greeted a contingent of four freshmen who have shown great promise in their first season on the mat.

Nick Floyd, who wrestles at 103 pounds, has won eight matches thus far this season. “Nick is a tough kid who is a fierce competitor,” said Howard. “He is improving all the time and has a great future in wrestling.”

Howard also sings the praises of Russell Trainor, wrestling at 119 pounds, who pulled out a big win in overtime in a recent match; Davis Beers at 171 pounds, who has two wins under his belt and “is getting better everyday;” says the coach; and Alex Solano, who has two varsity wins plus a number of JV victories and who learned the sport in the youth programs Howard has conducted in recent years.

“We have a very dedicated group of young men who are working hard and improving,” said Howard, who drives the six Winthrop team members to their practices in Saugus each day.

The Chaos grapplers, who compete in the Cape Ann/Northeastern Conference League, maintain a busy schedule, with dual meets during the week and tournaments on weekends. They were set to face Malden yesterday (Wednesday) and compete in a tournament in Lynnfield on Saturday. They travel to Beverly next Wednesday.
