Brown’s late goal ties Masconomet

Taylor Brown’s blast from 45 feet with 1:23 to play gave the Winthrop Lady Bulldogs hockey team a 2-2 tie with Masconomet last Wednesday. Brown, a defenseman who has emerged as the team’s leading scorer, had moved around two defenders before letting go her slap shot for the unassisted tally.

“Taylor is known for her big shot, and that was one of them,” said head coach Anthony Martucci. “She beat one of the best goalies in the league, which says something about how hard she can shoot.”

Winthrop had taken a 1-0 lead in the opening period on a goal by Lindsey Barker, assisted by Chelsey Bartlett and Kelly Devenney. However, Masco punched home two power play goals in the third period, necessitating Brown’s late game heroics.

Martucci and his crew then hosted Springfield Cathedral on Saturday, a co-op team that is an amalgam of girls from western Mass. Two goals by Brown left matters at 2-2 midway through the second period, but Cathedral then burst out with three unanswered goals before the frame ended. Two more markers in the third period resulted in the 7-2 final score.

The loss was the first of the season for the Winthrop/English squad, which now stands at 3-1-4 on the season and is halfway to a berth in the post season state tournament. Martucci and his crew now will make the long trek to Springfield for a return engagement on Saturday before returning home for a 3:00 match up with Wilmington on the holiday on Monday.
