To no one’s surprise, Winthrop voters followed the course of the state and gave Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley and State Sen. Scott Brown the nod for the Democratic and Republican nominations in the special primary election held Tuesday for the U.S. Senate.
The two candidates will square off in the final election on Jan. 19, 2010, with the winner set to fill the seat previously held by the late Edward M. Kennedy.
With Coakley rated as the favorite to win the election, there already has been considerable talk about who would fill Coakley’s seat as Attorney General. Pursuant to the state constitutional procedure, the two state legislative bodies (the Senate and House of Representatives) will select the new attorney general. This means that Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo (who presides over 160 House members as compared to 40 state senators) no doubt will have a lot of say in the selection process.
The rumor mill has Secretary of State Bill Galvin interested in becoming Attorney General, which in turn would open up the Secretary of State’s seat. Either way, there will be a lot of political maneuvering on Beacon Hill and much to dissect and analyze in the coming months.
