Local legislator among those on hand, paying tribute to legendary senator
Bob DeLeo, speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, attended both the Memorial Mass and funeral for our late United States Senator, Edward M. Kennedy. As a former selectman and the town’s state representative on Beacon Hill and in his position as speaker of the House, DeLeo knew the senator on a professional and personal level for many years.
DeLeo joined such prominent officials as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and U.S. senators John McCain, Orrin Hatch, and John Kerry and so many others in what he called an overwhelming experience and wonderful tribute to Senator Kennedy.
The emotional remarks of some of the speakers at the funeral, notably those of the senator’s sons, Edward Jr. and Patrick, will be remembered for a long time. The Winthrop Town Council paid tribute to Senator Kennedy and former Winthrop High administrator Matty Boyle with a moment of silence at its meeting Tuesday night.
