Winthrop is planning to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and the Fourth of July in style this year with a mix of new events and long-standing traditions. On Friday, July 3, the Winthrop Day Celebration and Boat Parade kicks off at noon at the Charles J. Famolare Public Landing at 707 Shirley Ave.
There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, a bounce house for the kids, a water slide, a DJ, and shell painting with the Winthrop Art Association. The boat parade, featuring boats from the local yacht clubs, is scheduled to set sail at 3:30 p.m. Those attending the event will be able to vote for a People’s Choice winner in the boat parade’s decorating contest.
Hannah Belcher, who is on the organizing committee for the Winthrop 250 event, praised the town for coming together to make the day happen.
“Events like this are where Winthrop really shines – it’s been incredible to see how many people, businesses, and community organizations have enthusiastically participated,” said Belcher. “Whether it has been Yacht Club representatives serving on the planning committee, donors of refreshments and prizes for the boat parade, or the Chamber of Commerce connecting the town directly to its business community, there has been a true sense of community in the planning of this event. Personally, celebrating the 250th, especially here in Winthrop, makes me proud to be related to some of the Revolutionary War soldiers from right here in town and gives me a sense of honor to be continuing to serve this community in a vastly different way these many years after their service.”
