Two Police Officers Promoted to Sergeant

Two Winthrop police officers were officially promoted to sergeant at last week’s town council meeting.

Town Clerk Denise Quist swore in David Brown and Michael Connolly as the department’s newest sergeants.

“Officer Connolly has been in the forefront of our narcotics investigations since 2018,” said Police Chief John Goodwin. “He has done a fantastic job and is always hard at work. His personality, his edginess makes him perfect for that position.”

Brown is a senior officer who has been with the department for about three decades, said Goodwin.

“It’s always nice to see someone with that many years move up,” said Goodwin. “Dave is probably the most competitive guy I’ve ever met … it’s a great honor to have him move up and I am looking forward to working with him.”

In other business, Council President Jim Letterie offered moments of silence for State Trooper Kevin Trainor, who died as a result of a crash with a wrong-way driver on Rte. 1 earlier this month, and former Winthrop DPW employee John Lyons.

“John Lyons worked for the Winthrop DPW for five years, and sadly passed away on May 6 at the age of 50,” said Letterie. “He was a loving husband of the late Marissa Lyons and is survived by his mother, Janice and many of his family. Those who knew John remember him as a good person with a genial spirit and a warm heart.”
