In his regular report to the town council, Town Manager Tony Marino provided an update on ongoing work on the new fire station at the old middle school site.
“With the Old Middle School and Auditorium work now complete, we are working on getting the stormwater pipes moved to accommodate the new fire station structure,” stated Marino. “Plan design continues, and we will hold a public hearing on the design in early April 2026; date and time to be announced soon. The next meeting of the Fire House Building Committee will be held on Monday, April 27 (at) 4:30 p.m.”
Marino also provided an update on the Tall Ships coming to Boston this summer to help celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary.
“We had a meeting with MWRA to discuss upcoming plans for the Sail Boston event on July 11,” Marino stated. “We have some plan ideas from the last time the Tall Ships came to Boston, and we will coordinate with MWRA. The Sail Boston event at Deer Island will be held on Saturday, July 11.”
During the event, Marino said traffic in Point Shirley will be restricted, and Winthrop will be assisting with shuttle buses to the viewing area at Deer Island. He said the town will post more information about parking and schedules as it becomes available.
“We are also looking for ideas to host a 250th Anniversary Celebration of America in Winthrop,” stated Marino. “The Town Council President and I were discussing the possibility of hosting an event from July 11th to 16th to coincide with the Tall Ships’ visit to Boston. We will also be reaching out to the Yacht Clubs about the best time to host a boat parade celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary.”
The town manager said he and Council President Jim Letterie are looking for a few town councilors to volunteer to help with ideas, community outreach, and event planning.
In other business, Marino said work on the FY27 Budget and Capital Plan continues as the administration looks forward to presenting the FY27 budget to the Town Council and Citizens Commission on Finance later this month.
“The City of Revere will host a groundbreaking ceremony at the Historic McKinley School on Friday, April 17, at 10 a.m. for any Town Councilor who would like to attend,” said Marino. “The McKinley School will be the new home of our regional dispatch center (MNRECC) with Revere and Chelsea.”
