Staff Report
Police Chief John Goodwin and the members of the Winthrop Police Department recently announced the passing of retired Winthrop Police Sergeant Arnim Scholwin.
Sgt. Scholwin passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Sgt. Scholwin, 87, had served as a Winthrop Police Officer for 38 years. He retired in 2003 after serving his last 10 years as night sergeant.
Sgt. Sholwin was a highly disciplined person who always put the rule of law above all else, according to Goodwin, who added that he was honest, straight forward, and led by example.
“It was a tremendous honor to work for him,” Goodwin stated. “He always put his officers first and led by example. He was often referred to as ‘old fashioned’ and highly disciplined, possessing many qualities that are hard to come by today.
“Sgt. Scholwin also had a hysterical dry sense of humor with a tremendous delivery in that unique German accent only he could deliver.”
Goodwin said the department’s thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this time of sorrow.
