Town Council still Accepting Applicants for Precinct 6 Seat

By Adam Swift

The town council is still taking applicants for a new Precinct 6 Councilor.

At last week’s meeting, Council President Jim Letterie said the council will still be taking letters of interest for the position until the first or second week of February.

The council is looking to appoint a replacement for John DaRos, who stepped down from his seat last November.

“Right now, we do have two letters of interest, one is from Marty Finn, who is actually in the audience with us, and the other one is from Danny Floyd,” said Letterie. “I would encourage people, if they would like to put a letter in, we are still accepting letters of interest. We will hopefully be coming full circle and having a full nine-member council by the middle of February.”

At the first meeting in February, Letterie said he will also be asking for a consolidation of the town council subcommittees.

“In the past, we’ve had up to eight subcommittees; eight subcommittees, three members on the committee, 24 members,” said Letterie, meaning most council members serve on three subcommittees.

The council president said there have been some attendance and minutes issues with that number of subcommittees.

“So I’m going to be asking the council at the next meeting to consolidate, and basically keeping the committees and having four council subcommittees,” said Letterie.

The consolidated subcommittees proposed by Letterie include a subcommittee on finance; a subcommittee on rules and ordinances; a combined subcommittee on public health, public safety, and public works; and the fourth would be a combined subcommittee on capital assets and economic development.

“This would have four subcommittees, you would have 12 spots, so you would have four councilors with a couple of committees and four councilors with one committee,” said Letterie.

In addition, Letterie said he would still like some council members to volunteer as liaisons to policy making boards in the town.

“It’s taking some work off the plate of our town clerk, who has to go around and try to get notes and updates from the policy making committees,” said Letterie. “It would give the councilors a chance to learn about what’s going on in the town and attend the meeting. They would not be voting members of the committee, they would not be participating in the committee, but they would basically be taking notes for themselves to then come to the next council meeting and specifically make a report.”

“Taste the Savings” Restaurant Week IN FULL SWING

The wait is over for local foodies. Winthrop’s highly anticipated “Taste the Savings” Restaurant Week is officially underway, running through Jan. 31.

Organized by the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, the event aims to shine a spotlight on the town’s diverse culinary landscape during what is traditionally a slower period for the hospitality industry. Residents and visitors are encouraged to skip the home-cooked meals this week and explore the exclusive deals offered by participating local eateries.

Exclusive Promotions: Participating Chamber member restaurants are featuring limited-time menus and special pricing designed to showcase their best dishes.

Diverse Flavors: From coastal seafood and international cuisine to classic casual comfort food, the event covers the full spectrum of Winthrop’s dining scene.

“Restaurant Week is about more than great food—it’s about community,” says Diana Aliberti, Executive Director of the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce. “This event encourages people to try new restaurants, revisit longtime favorites, and support the hardworking restaurateurs who make Winthrop such a special place to dine.”

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Chamber officials suggest using this week as a “scouting mission.” It’s the perfect time to sample menus and find the ideal atmosphere before booking your holiday reservations.
