Council Deadlocks on Board of Registrars Appointment

The board of registrars will continue to operate as a two-person board for the time being.

A spot on the board opened up when registrar Paul Reardon was elected to the town council last November.

At last week’s meeting, the council failed to approve Council President Jim Letterie’s appointment of Debbie Chavis to the board of registrars. Councilors Reardon, Suzanne Swope, Joseph Romano, and Pat Costigan voted against the appointment, while Letterie, Kurt Millar, Kim Dimes, and Max Tassinari supported the appointment.

Swope noted that there were two candidates who applied for the opening and that the second candidate had legal experience.

“I do hope that whatever happens here that everybody is ready to work on voting to make sure that we feel confident that it is fair and that there are no problems in the election,” said Swope.

Swope noted that there have been many questions about national elections, and that she wants to make sure that everything is done properly on the local level.

“I would just like to say I have 100 percent confidence in the board of registrars we have, and the town clerk, and the running of all elections we’ve had,” said Letterie. “I think they have been impeccably run, I think the results come out in a timely manner; so I have the utmost confidence in the staff we have and I am sure any new staff will continue that excellent tradition we have.”

With the deadlocked vote, Letterie said the board of registrars will continue with two members until he brings forward another appointment that the council will approve.

The council did approve the appointment of Landon LaPorte to the conservation commission and Wendy Millar-Page to the Firehouse Reuse Committee.

Letterie said the reuse committee still needs two more volunteers to help make a decision on the future use of the Shirley Street and Pauline Street fire stations.

In addition, there are openings on the licensing board, board of appeals, and conservation committee, Letterie said.
