Winthrop Public Library and Museum Unveils Mural Honoring late Veteran and Former Trustee Donald Sullivan

Special to the Journal

The Winthrop Public Library & Museum has installed a new mural honoring Donald Sullivan, a deceased veteran and former Library Trustee. The artwork was funded by Donald’s brother, Paul Sullivan, who passed away before its completion. In September 2023, Paul approached the library with the idea of commemorating his brother’s contributions to the community.

Former Trustee Ron Bergman shared: “I had the pleasure of serving on the Board with Don Sullivan for several years. He was a dedicated, hard-working trustee who approached everything with intelligence and humor. His keen insight was always a positive for all involved. Knowing Don, I’m sure he took that approach to family, friends, and work. He is missed.”

The mural aims to be positive and uplifting while referencing Winthrop’s military history, including the now-closed Fort Banks.

Veterans Service Officer Phil Ronan noted: “Donald fought at one of the bloodiest battles in Vietnam, Hamburger Hill. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Cross of Gallantry from the Republic of South Vietnam, among other medals and honors. When he returned home, he worked with young veterans suffering from PTSD.”

The mural was painted off-site by Joshua Winer, an award-winning artist specializing in murals, mosaics, mobiles, and public art. Installation was delayed about six months due to construction of a new walkway behind the library. Tragically, Paul Sullivan passed away during this period, though he was able to visit Winer’s studio to see the finished piece.

The library extends deep gratitude to Mr. Winer for his exceptional work and to Paul Sullivan for his generosity and devotion to his brother. Patrons are invited to enjoy this bright, uplifting tribute to Winthrop and its community.
