Donations are being accepted at several locations around town to help members of the Delehanty family who lost their home in a fire on Shirley Street on Saturday, Nov. 1.
At last week’s town council meeting, Precinct 6 Councilor John DaRos read a community call to action that former Winthrop Police Lt. Mary Crisafi recently posted on social media.
“A longtime Winthrop family, the Delehantys, suffered a devastating loss when a fire destroyed their home on November 1,” the post read. “They nearly lost everything. While insurance will eventually help, there is an immediate need for essentials such as clothing, toiletries, or other basic items.”
A gift card collection to assist the family is underway, and cards can be dropped off at the senior center or the Winthrop Meat Market.

“Lets come together, as Winthrop always does, to help the family in their time of need,” Crisafi’s post concluded.
DaRos noted that the fire on Shirley Street is the second in his precinct in the past several months. In June, fire destroyed a home on Trident Avenue.
According to Winthrop Fire officials, the Nov. 1 fire on Shirley Street displaced 10 people, although no injuries were reported. The inspectional services department declared the building was uninhabitable.
According to Fire Chief Stephen Calandra, crews and mutual aid partners did a great job bringing the fire under control quickly given the tight quarters, preventing a much worse outcome.
