Council Approves Funding for Water Meter Replacement Project

At its regular meeting last week, the town council approved bonding $1.1 million for the second year of a five-year water meter and water valve capital project.

The project will be paid for through a general obligation bond.

The motion was approved following the council’s finance subcommittee recommending approval of the appropriation, and a public hearing at the council meeting.

“(Public Works) Director Steve Calla was with us at the subcommittee meeting, and he told us that the $1.1 million breaks out into $300,000 to replace water meters, $300,000 to exercise the valves, and another $500,000 to replace the valves,” said Precinct 6 Councilor John DaRos.

The project will help keep valves current and ensure accuracy for both the town and residents in terms of reading the water meters, according to Calla.

DaRos noted that the funding is for the second year of the five-year plan, with three more years to go.

“This is part of a capital plan, this is not something that just came up,” said Council President Jim Letterie.

Calla added that the five-year project is something that is very needed for the town.
