Applications Open for Civilian Police Academy

Special to the Transcript

The Winthrop Police Department is now accepting applications for the 2025 Annual Civilian Police Academy.

This program is free and open to Winthrop residents age 18 and up. Classes will be held on Thursdays starting Oct. 23 through Jan. 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Lyceum Room at the E.B. Newton School Cultural Center, 45 Pauline St. There will be no classes on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Day.

This class experience is designed to bring citizens into the station and give them a clearer picture of what it’s like to be a Winthrop Police Officer.

Members of the Winthrop Police Department will lead classes in their fields of expertise during the 10 weeks. Topics will include domestic violence, police exploration, motor vehicle law, patrol procedures, accidents, firearms, critical incidents, implicit bias, gangs, juveniles, as well as narcotics enforcement, prevention, and treatment. Residents will learn a great deal about all aspects of police work and leave with a true representation of life as a police officer.

Participants will also have the opportunity to accompany a Winthrop Police Officer during their shift.

Residents are asked to drop off or mail a completed application to the Winthrop Police Department, 3 Metcalf Square. Mailed applications should be addressed to the care of Lt. Stephen Rogers.
