The fall sports season for Winthrop High athletes is set to swing into high gear this week. Coach Jack Wallace’ Viking golf team opened its season last week with a victory over Northeastern Conference rival Saugus, 52-20 last Wednesday at the Winthrop Golf Club.
The linksmen then hosted Beverly on Thursday, but fell short by the slimmest of margins, 36.5-35.5. The Vikings took on non-league opponent Malden Catholic at Mt. Hood this past Monday and were scheduled to travel to Tedesco Country Club today (Thursday) to meet Swampscott. They will make the long trek to meet Rockport at the Rockport Golf Club tomorrow (Friday), journey to Newton Commonwealth Monday to face Arlington Catholic, and travel to the Ferncroft Country Club to take on Danvers on Tuesday before returning home to host Medford next Thursday.
Coach Phil Ronan and the Winthrop High boys soccer team kicked off its season this past Tuesday with a match against non-league opponent Arlington Catholic at Miller Field. The Vikings were scheduled to travel to Northeastern Conference (NEC) South rival Salem yesterday (Wednesday). They will return home to entertain non-league opponent Stoneham Saturday morning at 10:00 at Miller and then will host NEC North foe Beverly next Monday at 5:00 before trekking to NEC South rival Swampscott next Wednesday. “We have a pretty good-looking team this year with eight returning starters led by captain Noah Bayersdorfer,” said Ronan.
“We have more depth than I have ever had, although most are freshmen and sophomores with decent skill. We also have two international exchange players, one of whom scored a terrific goal on a bicycle kick in our only scrimmage, a 2-0 victory over Essex Agricultural Tech.” Coach Tracey Martucci’s girls soccer team was scheduled to open its season yesterday (Wednesday) with a match against NEC South opponent Salem at Miller Field. The Lady Vikings will trek to NEC North foe Beverly next Monday and will entertain NEC South rival Swampscott next Wednesday. Coach Jeremy Wein’s volleyball squad opened its season this past Tuesday with a home match against Triton and will trek north to Swampcott next Tuesday and to Marblehead next Thursday.
The 2025 edition of the Lady Vikings will be led by captain Anastasia Gajica. “For preseason, we’ve just been hammering out a good playlist while getting some reps,” noted Wein. “So far, we have added Black Sabbath (RIP Ozzy), Mastodon (RIP Brent), some more Zao, Coalesce, Rage Against The Machine, End, and Clipse. It could be our best playlist yet. “It gets Kylie McFarland, Sofia Gonzalez, and Makayla Herdt nice and angry, so we will have some fun this season,” Wein added.
“I am looking forward to the youth movement. We have welcomed coach Kyara and coach Rosas to lead our junior varsity teams. We are all ready to rock.” The WHS boys and girls cross country teams, led by coach Eric Ferguson, opened their 2025 season yesterday (Wednesday) at Peabody and will travel to Masconomet next Wednesday.
