John Ross

Retired Chief Financial Officer of United Way of Mass Bay    

John A. Ross of Marina Bay, Quincy and formerly of London, England passed away on July 18, 2025 at the age of 87.

He was the son of the late Kathleen and Donald Ross and brother of the late Donald, Jr. and is survived by his children, Christina of England, Alex of Cambodia and Olivia of Australia. John also leaves behind his beloved partner, Joanne Nuzzo of Winthrop with whom he shared love of travel, music and fine dining.

Additionally, John was an avid golfer and 40+ year proud member of The Country Club Brookline. A voracious reader, a lover of wine and a keen tennis player. John also enjoyed swimming, especially in the waters of Sanibel Island.

John retired from the United Way of Mass Bay as their Chief Financial Officer. Prior to that, he was the General Manager and CFO of Bank of Boston in London before transferring to the Boston headquarters, assuming various senior management positions for 20 years. John served as chairman, treasurer and trustee of the Arthritis Foundation and Director of Finance for ABCD, the largest human services agency in NE along with similar volunteer roles for several colleges.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation in the St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop today, Thursday, July 24 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in the church at 11:30 a.m. Services will conclude with the interment in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Joseph Giuffreda

Retired telephone company salesman and beloved Winthrop resident for more than 37 years

We mourn the loss of Joseph H. Giuffreda, who passed away in Winthrop on July 15, 2025.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 31, 1931, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Gorman) and Gaetano Giuffreda. Joseph was a beloved resident of Winthrop for over 37 years. He dedicated much of his life to his work in sales for the telephone company, touching the lives of many with his professionalism and dedication. Outside of work, Joseph was passionate about football, with a loyal allegiance to the Miami Dolphins and was a season ticket holder for years during his time living in South Florida. In his leisure time, Joseph found happiness in dancing, traveling, and the exhilarating sport of roller skating. He also had a love for racquetball, engaging in spirited matches with friends and family.

He was the devoted husband of Carolyn T. (Ditges) and the loving father of Karen E. Hawko and her husband, John of Nahant and Joseph H. Giuffreda and his wife, Diane of Lewisville, Texas; dear brother of Richard, Robert, and James Giuffreda; cherished grandfather of Gregory, Brian, Christopher, Marie and Alex and great grandfather of Lucy, Emmie, Ari, Addie and Harrison.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
