Staff Report
A two-story home on Trident Avenue was destroyed by a two-alarm fire on Saturday evening.
Calls reporting a fire at the 150-year-old wood-frame building came in shortly after 7:15 p.m., and Winthrop crews responded along with firefighters from Chelsea, Revere, Everett, Boston, and Massport Fire Rescue.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire, although there was concern there was someone in the home at the time of the fire, but it was later determined that the resident was not at home and was at a Red Sox game at the time of the fire. Two firefighters were evaluated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
“Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of our Winthrop Fire crews and mutual aid partners, we were able to bring a dangerous fire under control before it could spread to neighboring homes,” Fire Chief Scott Wiley said in a statement. “I’m proud of their work tonight and grateful that no one was hurt. Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners for their prompt response.
The Boston Sparks Association responded to the scene on the second alarm to provide assistance, including pre-chilled Gatorade, snacks, cold/wet towels, coffee, and light towers for scene lighting. The Winthrop Yacht Club provided sandwiches at the scene.
“Special thanks for a job well done to our Winthrop Fire Department and Police Department for ensuring that the surrounding residents were safe and neighboring properties only experienced some vinyl siding damage,” said Town Manager Tony Marino. “Our CLEAR team has reached out to the homeowner to see what he may need, and we will forward any requests out as many residents and neighbors have reached out as to how they can help during this difficult time.”
