John D. Booras
Retired Winthrop letter carrier and gifted runner and athlete
John D. Booras of Winthrop passed away on May 14, 2025, at the age of 92. He was the beloved son of the late Demetrios and Pauline (Georgountzos) Booras and the devoted and supportive brother of the late Paul Booras, Stella (Booras) Thomas and Peter Booras; a loving father to Mary Booras and Barbara Booras and father-in-law to Matthew Mahowald. John was a newly proud grandfather to Kai Marlan Booras Mahowald. He was loved by his late wife, Roseann (Cullen) Booras and former wife, Deborah Peretti and he was a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews, with a special place in his heart for Kathy (Thomas) Koutroubas and Paula (Thomas) Carrozza.
The son of Greek immigrants, John came from a large, loving family and was proud of his heritage. He shared his love of Greek food, culture, and community with all who knew him. John especially enjoyed gathering with loved ones at local Greek festivals. Like his brothers, John served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Army.
From a young age, John was a gifted runner and athlete, and would go on to compete in many marathons and road races throughout New England and beyond. He was a member/teammate of the Boston Athletic Association and was one of the first road race course measurers in the region, which included measuring and placing course markers along the Boston Marathon route. John competed in and won many races, the Atlantic City Marathon among them, and achieved many impressive sub-3 hour Boston Marathon times. His love of the sport helped inspire many others at a time when running had yet to become mainstream. Many in Winthrop will remember seeing him running, walking, or biking around town.
John was also known as a kind and familiar face during his many years as a USPS letter carrier in Winthrop and Boston, until his retirement. In recent years, he found a close-knit community at the United Methodist Church of Winthrop, where he attended weekly services and especially enjoyed the music program with the generous help of church members Joe and Renee Pike.
John was a lifelong supporter of countless charitable causes – many centered around food – often delivering bread to local soup kitchens and contributing to church suppers.
A passionate local historian and avid collector, John amassed an extraordinary archive of photos and negatives documenting Boston, Winthrop, and New England. He generously supported institutions such as the Winthrop Public Library Museum, Boston Athenaeum, and Arthur Griffin Center.
John’s proudest accomplishment was his two daughters – Mary and Barbara, in whom he instilled values of humility, charity, quiet kindness and the joy of sharing good food. Following in his footsteps, “the girls” would go on to continue the family’s running legacy by competing in dozens of road races and nearly ten marathons between the two of them.
Services were held at the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home on Sunday, May 18. Interment was private.
A Celebration of Life will be announced in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Greater Boston Foodbank, NAMI – Massachusetts, Fast Feet Boston, or Friends of the Winthrop Library.
