Eugene “Gino” Carver

His stories, infectious laugh and quirky ways will be remembered by all who knew him

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene “Gino” W. Carver on April 12, 2025.

Born July 1, 1946 in Winthrop, he was the beloved son of the late John and Evelyn (Moynihan) Carver of Winthrop; the loving father of Timothy Carver of Henderson, NV, Jean Mathews and her husband, Everett of Cherryfield, ME, and Michele D’Amelio and her husband, Rich of Winthrop ; adored “Grandpa” and “Papa Gino” to Nicholas, Ella, and Owen Carver, Katy Mathews, Jenny (Mathews) Goston and her husband, Josh and Richard, Sage and Ariana D’Amelio; cherished brother to Ann and Marie “Skip” Carver of Winthrop; best friend for over 50 years, of Billy Burns of Dorchester and his children who fondly called him Uncle Gino — Corey, Shane, Shannon, and Brandi; and his dear friend, Gina Mazzulli of Quincy (NOT BOSTON), who he affectionately referred to as his “fiancé,” and he was loved by many cousins and friends.

Gino was a cook, painter, carpenter, handyman, mover, roofer, electrician’s assistant, sales clerk, tinkerer and a “Little Job Specialist.” If he couldn’t assemble, re-build, or fix it, he would “MacGyver” it. He never left home without his pocket knife, duct tape, and band-aids. Up until his death, Gino worked part-time at Charles Street Supply in Boston (thanks to a job given to him by his “meddlesome daughter”) where he will be dearly missed by co-workers and customers.

He was always up for an adventure, a road trip, a concert, driving cross-country several times, traveling to Romania and Mexico, spending time with family in Maine, helping rebuild homes in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, caving, camping, ziplining, boating, fishing, and so much more. He had many stories, some slightly embellished, about his adventures. Gino was an avid reader who loved history and architecture in and around Boston. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his grandchildren, who were his greatest joy.

He loved to tell people: “When I was a Girl Scout,” “I wanted to join the circus,” “I have an unofficial diploma from Harvard,” and “Who’s better than you? Not many, if any.” His stories, infectious laugh, and quirky ways will be remembered by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his name to the American Heart Association or Habitat for Humanity.
