The town council is beginning the process to appoint a successor to former Precinct 2 Councilor John Munson.
Munson resigned from the council two weeks ago, citing family and business commitments.
The council is taking letters of interest for those who wish to serve as Precinct 2 Councilor through the end of the year.
The Precinct 2 position will also be on the municipal election ballot this fall and candidates can now take out nomination papers to fill that seat through Munson’s term that expires at the end of 2027.
“Councilor Munson was unique in a lot of ways in that .. he really listened to his constituents,” Council President Jim Letterie said at last week’s council meeting. “I would like to say that every councilor listens to his constituents, but he took it to the next level, he really went down to the residents and got involved with any problems and brought it to the forefront of the council.”
Letterie noted that the town charter states that if someone resigns from a precinct council seat less than six months from an election, it can remain vacant until the next election. But Munson resigned at just over six months from the November municipal election, Letterie said.
“The council will pick a successor through a majority vote of the council,” said Letterie. “That successor will stay in office … until the next biennial election in November.”
Letterie said the council will be taking letters of interest for the council seat through the end of May, and then the council will conduct an interview process and ultimately vote to fill the position.
Councilors will be able to nominate a candidate who has sent a letter of interest, with the first candidate receiving five of the eight council votes filling the seat through the end of the year.
