WHS boys lacrosse readying for opener

With the Winthrop High boys lacrosse team set to open its season next Tuesday (April 1) with a home contest against Malden Catholic on the turf at Miller Field (the opening draw is set for 4:00), veteran head coach Brian Donnelly and his crew are eagerly anticipating their 2025 campaign.

“We are very much looking forward to the 2025 season,” said Donnelly. “We have a solid mix of returners led by captains Mike Holgerson, Seth Sacco, and Sean Dolan. It will also be excellent to see junior Nick Romano get full games in net. He has been excellent when he has seen time and the coaching staff and players have the utmost confidence in his ability to lead the team in net.

“Our offense is looking for continued success from Seth Sacco, Colin Cifuni, CJ Cifuni and Mike Holgerson, while looking to players like Thomas Babine, Luke Githinji and Charlie Ferrara to take on a bigger role this year and continue to push themselves,” Donnelly continued.

“Most of our returners have seen some solid time on the varsity field and we are going to rely on them to step up and give us some solid minutes,” the coach added. “We are hoping to develop players like Declan Howard,  Matt Maddalone, and Chris Beshere throughout the season and rely on them for some solid minutes.”

Winthrop played a scrimmage against Stoneham Saturday.

“We saw a lot of positive aspects and some things we need to focus on as we move forward,” said Donnelly. “ Our defense looked super solid and we were able to clear the ball well. Nick played excellent in net and only held them to a few goals. Offensively, we had trouble finding the back of the net early, but once we got rolling, our shot selection improved. Our big focus is just trying to make sure that we improve every day, take a step forward, and be better than the day before.”

After the opener on Tuesday with what Donnelly termed “a tough Malden Catholic team,” the Vikings will travel to Northeast Regional next Wednesday (April 2).
