Inspired By Submission

Dear Editor,

I was personally inspired by Scott Mahoney-Wright’s letter to the editor in the February 27 issue of “The Winthrop Sun Transcript.”  Scott made reference to “the ignorance, vitriol and violence exhibited towards people who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community and especially transgendered people.”  Scott indicated that this “is being fueled by the President and others in his orb.” 

The positive and uplifting part of Mahoney-Wright’s letter is his plea for LGBTQIA+ people to unite together with their allies and stand up for and on behalf of anyone being marginalized and whose rights…are under fire from people like Donald Trump, JD Vance, Elon Musk and so many others.”  I then thought of women, persons of color, minorities, working, tax-paying immigrants, physically and emotionally disabled persons.  Then, on a good note, I remembered COSTCO’s positive efforts to support Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI)

 Scott Mahoney-Wright mentioned “legal resources…to assist, answer questions and navigate through these dark waters.”  However, he noted in particular, “There is something to be said for resiliency and perseverance.”  Scott encouraged all to work together, supporting and helping one another. The writer clearly noted, “Do not give up nor give in.  Not now, not ever. …Do not give up and give into their ill will.  Now is not the time to lay down in fear.  Now is the time to rise up in courage, fortitude, determination, strength and empowered.  We will not go backwards.”  Thank you, Scott Mahoney-Wright!

Supports Tax Override

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my vehement support for the proposed tax override to fund Winthrop’s public schools. Investing in education is one of the most important commitments a community can make.

My husband and I do not have children, but we recognize that a well-educated population benefits us all, not just parents with children in school.  Public education contributes to a well-functioning society by generating a more educated workforce, fostering community engagement, and promoting economic growth.  Strong schools lead to stronger property values, a more skilled workforce, and a thriving local economy.  Strong schools ensure that our children receive the education they deserve.  The benefits of this override far outweigh the cost.

Not every family can afford private school, and they shouldn’t have to. Public education is the great equalizer, providing every child the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. But without this tax override, our schools will face cuts that could lead to overcrowded classrooms, fewer educational programs, and diminished opportunities that could affect their futures—and ultimately, the future of Winthrop.

I urge my fellow residents to join me in supporting this tax override for our schools.  Vote ‘Yes’ to the override on Saturday, April 5th.  Put it on your calendar and make a plan to vote.

Stand up for our kids and the long-term success of our community.
