Mike Eruzione, whose very name elicits cheers and chills from those who witnessed his gold-medal winning achievement and a new generation of fans, paid a visit to Winthrop High School last Thursday.
Eruzione, captain of the 1980 Miracle On Ice Olympic hockey team, presented a check from Winthrop Charities to Supt. of Schools Lisa Howard adjacent to his Olympic jersey display in the school lobby.
The Eruzione family’s donation will go toward a new treadmill, a television in the high school gymnasium, weight room equipment, and athletic supplies for elementary and middle school programs.
Howard said the donation is one of many that Winthrop Charities has given to the school district through the years.
“We’re always grateful for the donation from Winthrop Charities and the Eruzione family,” said Howard, who played college softball at Boston College after leading Winthrop High to a state championship. “Mike’s always very generous, and it certainly helps our students get extra things that they wouldn’t otherwise have – whether it’s coats, hats, gloves, or school equipment – so his generosity is much appreciated.”
WHS Principal Matt Crombie said, “Mike Eruzione is a big reason why our athletic programs are able to move forward from year to year and is a big part of the development of our athletes themselves because of his generosity and looking out for our kids. We always appreciate that.”
Winthrop Athletic Director Mark DeGregorio also expressed his gratitude to the Eruzione family.
“It very nice of Mike Eruzione and Winthrop Charities donating some funds for all the schools, not just Winthrop High School,” said DeGregorio. “It’s always great to have the backing of the community from organizations like Winthrop Charities, Viking Pride, and the Winthrop Foundation. Mike Eruzione has stepped up once again for Winthrop. It’s what makes our community such a great place to work – there are so many people who are willing to contribute and help in any way they can.”
