WHS boys soccer falls in state tourney
The Winthrop High boys soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision to Tri-County Regional Vocational School in an opening-round contest of the MIAA Division 4 state soccer tournament this past Sunday evening before a large crowd of about 400-500 Viking rooters at Miller Field.
Winthrop entered the tourney as the #29 seed in D-4 with a 7-10-1 record, while the visiting Cougars, who made the long trek from Franklin, were the #36 seed in D-4 with a 10-6-2 mark.
Fabiano Alcala Rodrigues scored the Viking goal on a superb free kick, while Tri-County scored both of its goals on long-range shots from distance. Winthrop dominated the action throughout the contest, thoroughly outplaying the Cougars. The Vikings hit the crossbar twice and the post once, but proved unable to reach the back of the Cougar net after Fabiano’s goal.
“Once again we didn’t hit our shots, which cost us as many as four games during the season,” noted WHS head coach Phil Ronan.
Although the Vikings’ season came to a sooner-than-hoped-for conclusion, Ronan’s squad, which finished in third place in the Lynch Division of the Northeastern Conference (NEC), earned a number of post-season accolades.
Winthrop received the NEC’s Sportsmanship Award as a team and Viking captains Sebastian Yepes and Noah Bayersdorfer were named to the NEC All Star team.
