HS boys soccer posts 9-0 win; ranked #31 in D-4
The Winthrop High boys soccer team cruised to a 9-0 victory over non-conference opponent Maimonides last Thursday evening under the lights at Miller Field.
Cleison “Junior” Sarnaglia and Fabiano Alcala Rodrigues led the Viking offensive output with two goals each. Camilo Balacazar Ceron, Naros Alebel, Sami Nessassi, Christian Bower, and Samuel Acero also reached the back of the Maimonides net.
“We essentially pulled most of the starters off at halftime when it was 4-0,” said WHS head coach Phil Ronan. “It was a perfect opportunity to play some of the subs who have not played a lot this year.”
Jackson Faber and reserve keeper Aaron Armistead split the duties in net to post the clean sheet.
The Vikings who are 5-8-1 on the season and are ranked #31 in the MIAA’s Division 4 Power Rankings, hosted Northeastern Conference South opponent Gloucester yesterday (Wednesday) in what Ronan termed “our most important game of the season.” They travel to Marblehead tomorrow (Friday) and will entertain Arlington Catholic next Wednesday.
Girls cross country tops Swampscott
The Winthrop High girls cross country team defeated Swampscott last week in a meet that was held on the Vikings’ home course at Deer Island.
The top five girls for Winthrop were Bailey Ferguson, Vienna Cardoza, Annabelle Giardino, Aitana Bartolome, and Emma Holgersen.
For the Viking boys, who came up short in their meet with the Big Blue, the top five runners were Gabriel Perez, Brody Burrill, Liam Natareno, Owen Nargi, and Sean Mcgloin.
“Eleven of our 15 runners posted personal record (PR) times, with the largest improvement coming from eighth-grader Joseph Spinale, who took 6:23 off his 5K time,” said WHS head coach Eric Ferguson.
Other noteworthy performances by members of the team who set PRs came from Ataina Bartolome, who improved her PR time by 2:04; Annabelle Giardano (0:21); Evan Tallent (2:02); Pedro Albuquerque (2:00), Liam Natareno (1:33); Owen Nargi (1:06); and Gabriel Perez (0:10).
The meet was highlighted by Senior Day festivities in which seniors Gabriel Perez, Owen Nargi, and Aitana Bartolome were recognized for their contributions to the WHS cross country program.
“The team also would like to thank Leo Haskell and Chris Yarrow for all of their hard work,” noted Ferguson. “They made sure all of our runners were in an organized and safe environment. Also, thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Derderian for doing an amazing job maintaining the trails.”
Ferguson and his crew traveled to Danvers yesterday (Wednesday) for their final dual meet of the season before the upcoming Northeastern Conference Meet.
WHS volleyball team Senior Night is Tuesday
The Winthrop High volleyball team will hold its Senior Night festivities next Tuesday evening when the Vikings host Revere at the WHS gym at 5:30.
In their contests this past week, coach Jeremy Wein’s squad dropped what he termed a “tough go” in their match with Saugus last Wednesday. “Nothing went our way, which is fine,” said Wein. “We have to learn how to fight through those moments.”
However, two nights later the Vikings hosted Danvers and turned in a much-better performance.
“We played at a level I haven’t seen yet,” Wein said. “We played connected and with purpose, which is why we took a set from an extremely-skilled Danvers team. Everyone played a part and everyone’s contributions mattered.”
Among the top performers for the Vikings were captain Zoey Bogusz, who provided 13 assists to her teammates; Sofia Gonzalez, who turned in a strong all-around effort with 18 digs, three kills, and two blocks; the trio of captain Ana Gajica, Helena Gajica, and Angela Tshowa, who combined for 13 blocks; Kylie McFarland, who had a block with some great swings; Sebastian Yepes, who came up with 15 digs; Sam Correa Betancur, “whose serving kept us going,” noted Wein; and Tina Fabiano, who accounted for four digs.
After the Revere match, the Vikings will travel to Peabody and Salem at the end of next week to wrap up their 2024 campaign.
