Winthrop Police announce sign ups for their annual Civilian Police Academy, beginning on Thursday, October 17, 2024, and continuing for 10 weekly sessions for Winthrop residents aged 18 and over.
Winthrop officers will instruct classes on subjects such as domestic violence, police exploring, motor vehicle law, patrol procedures, accidents, firearms, critical incidents, implicit bias, gangs, juvenile law, and narcotic enforcement, prevention, and treatment, along with many other topics relevant to law enforcement and community engagement. The academy will conclude with each student accompanying an officer for a “ride-along” to experience a day in the life of patrol .
This experience is designed to bring citizens into the station to provide a clear picture of what it’s like to be a Winthrop police officer. While learning a great deal about all aspects of police work, the class is interactive, educational and fun.

“I can’t overstate how much I loved the Citizen’s Police Academy. I learned so much and it gave me a deeper appreciation for all that WPD does for our community.” Hannah Belcher, Town Council Vice President and Precinct 3 representative.
“The Civilian Police Academy offered a unique opportunity to delve into the multifaceted world of law enforcement. The MILO simulator training and simulated traffic stops in particular, demonstrated the split second decisions officers must make to ensure safety. We got to see the human side of police work and the challenges officers may face both on and off the job.” Aaron Williams, Commission for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Relations, board member; Community Action for Safe Alternatives aka CASA Vice President, loving father and active community member.
“A great program! We learned a lot. It was very informative and fun. Everyone should try it!” the esteemed Mr. Peter Gill.
Classes will be held on Thursday nights from 6:30pm to 9:00pm for 10 sessions starting on Thursday, October 17, 2024, and running until January 16, 2025. Classes will not be held on Halloween (October 31), Thanksgiving (November 28) and during the week leading up to and including Christmas (December 19 and December 26).
