Savvas Steve Demetriou
October 20, 1929 – August 19, 2024
On Monday, August 19, 2024, Savvas “Steve” Demetriou, 94, of Naples, Florida died peacefully in his sleep.
Steve was born on the Greek island of Cyprus, son of the late Christina and Demetris Yerosavvas.
In 1949, at the age of 20, he emigrated from the Greek village- Droushia/Paphos through Ellis Island to work in New Jersey with his godfather in the restaurant business. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Banks in Winthrop, Mass for the 19th Coastal Artillery Regiment — a designated Command Center for Boston Harbor Nuclear Radar threat monitoring.
During his military service, Steve brought his younger brother Peter over from Cyprus and together they purchased the Donut Hole, a popular breakfast place across the street from Fort Banks.
Soon after, they expanded to create an iconic family restaurant – Brothers Restaurant.
Steve was the epitome of the American Dream, an entrepreneur who went on to purchase a shopping mall that included Demetri Brothers Liquor (famous for the “coldest beer in town.”)
He was known as charming, hospitable and a man of great faith.
Early in his career journey, Steve met Marina Pavles at a Greek event in New York, and it was love at first sight. On June 30, 1955, Steve married Marina and had an amazingly beautiful marriage for 67 years before Marina passed away in May of 2022. Together they were initially members of the St George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn and after moving to Naples, Florida they joined St Katherine Greek Orthodox Church.
Surviving are son, Steve (Dana) Demetriou of Dallas, TX; two daughters, Christina Demetriou of South Yarmouth, MA and Nelia Demetriou of Naples, FL; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one brother, Peter Demetriou of Winthrop.
On Friday, August 23rd, Father Demetre Mott conducted a funeral followed by Entombment – both took place at Naples Memorial Gardens.

Pauline Lyons
Her story is a legacy of true love
Pauline Lyons of Winthrop passed away at home on August 23. She was 95 years old.
Born in Lynn, the beloved daughter of the late Constantina (Gianias) and Christo Stratigikis, she was a resident of Winthrop for over 56 years. She worked for Sears and Roebuck as a clerk as well as working with her husband at Samuel’s Pharmacy in Winthrop Center for decades.
Beautifully stylish, scores of residents enjoy relaying stories of her expert assistance from Samuel’s cosmetic counter or from the stands as she attended all her sons and grandchildren’ events– a true Viking..
She was the devoted wife of Lloyd Lyons for over seventy years, the loving mother of John Lyons and his wife, Peg of Winthrop, and Peter Lyons and his companion, Beth McGinnis of Mashpee; dear sister of the late John, Peter and Nicholas Stratigikis; cherished grandmother of Tiffany Lyons Shliapa and her husband, John, Peter Lloyd Lyons and his wife, Anne Marie, Christian Lyons and the late Christine Lyons; great grandmother of Zoey, Sophia, Nicholas Shliapa and Evan Lyons and beloved aunt of Christo Stratos and his wife, Carolyn of Wells, Maine.
Her story is a legacy of true love, sparked by a dance to Tommy Dorsey music in a Revere dance hall. As they held hands some seventy years later, this beauty breathed her last, as her Love – Lloyd – kept his promise and never left her side.
For each child to the greats, her hard work, values and sacrifices leave behind more than black and white photos, afghans and needlepoint. Beautiful Pauline – Yaya – instilled traditions, the value of good education, confidence and pride of community and country.
The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 29, 2024 followed by a funeral service in the funeral home. Services concluded with the interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Anderson, his mother Catherine Anderson, his siblings: Susan Anderson-Noonan and her husband, David of Amherst and Paul Anderson and his fiancé, Lisa Parsons Brennan of Halifax. He is survived by many nieces and nephews: Simone Noonan and her husband, Justin Spears of North Carolina, John Noonan of New York, Olivia, Sara, Dylan and Anderson, Christopher Griffin, Lauren (Griffin) Lewis, and her husband, Tyler, Rose and Kai DiMuzio. He was very close to his In-Laws, Pauline and Edward DiMuzio of Stoneham, sister-in-law, Susan DiMuzio Citroni and her husband Jeff of North Reading, and Diane DiMuzio and her husband, Brian Castle of Cumberland, Rhode Island. Richard was born at Winthrop hospital on December 15, 1960. He graduated from Winthrop High School, Class of 1979, attended Wentworth Institute and received an Associates Degree in Aircraft Maintenance. After working for several small electrical companies, he began working at MIT in February of 2003. He was married to Annette on April 20,1990. They had two boys and continued to live in Winthrop.
Richard loved to snowmobile on Sunrise Lake in New Hampshire. The family enjoyed spending many vacations together, including Disney World when his dad retired, many summers at Conway Lake and trips to Pennsylvania. Over the past seven years, Saratoga became a yearly summer trip with the entire DiMuzio clan. He was an avid Boston sports fan but his true love was the Bruins, always screaming “G-O-A-L “ when they scored!
He was very handy and his tool bench would prove it. He supported his wife through her two breast cancer diagnosis. With her family, he would walk (very fast) at The Making Strides for Breast Cancer since 2003. He also supported the local cancer support group Survivors By The Sea -a local founded in 2006. Annette was One of the first 11 in the group. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors when he could (until he couldn’t). He was seen riding his bike (and eventually his scooter) visiting friends and local businesses around town and Deer Island.
In 2017 Richard was diagnosed with neurological celiac. The next seven years would show his health slowly decline. He went into long-term care in July 2023 until his passing.
He will now rest in peace with his brother Eddie and his dad (lovingly known to his family as Uncle Swede.)
