Mildred Emmett

NE Telephone/Verizon Retiree and Proud Member of the Telephone Pioneers

Mildred M. (Placido) Emmett of Winthrop, passed away on June 2 at the age of 99 at the Advocate Health Care Center in East Boston. 

Millie retired from New England Telephone/Verizon in 1989 and was a proud member of the Telephone Pioneers. She had made many wonderful friendships through her years at the Telephone Company.  She enjoyed her family especially and loved sharing wonderful memories.

The loving daughter of the late Terrance and Mary (Morrissey) Placido, she was the beloved wife of the late Vincent Emmett; devoted mother of James Davis and his wife, Diane, Maureen Davis, Darlene Ferrara and her husband, Frank and the late Frank Davis and his surviving wife, Roberta; dear sister of the late Dorothy Kincade and cherished grandmother of nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service honoring Millie’s life will be held at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home, 971 Saratoga St., Orient Heights, East Boston on Saturday, June 10th from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

The family would like to say special thank you’s to the caregivers and staff at Advocate Health Care, Care Dimension, and Winthrop PACE for their wonderful support through this time.

Guy Sasso Jr.

Mass Dept of Revenue Retiree, Honored by Mass. State Police

Guy A. Sasso Jr., 74, of Winthrop, formerly of Medford, passed away on May 21.

Guy was born in Medford and was a graduate of Medford High School. He also attended Mass. Bay Community College and Northeastern University.

In 2010, he retired after 38 years from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. He held many roles including Chief of Special Investigations, Director of Seizure Unit and Chief of Criminal Investigations to name a few. He was passionate about his work, creating multi-agency task forces investigating both civil and criminal cases. He worked alongside local, State, Federal and International law enforcement agencies. He created specialized financial investigative training modules and was honored by the Massachusetts State Police.

He enjoyed life at “The Lake” in New Hampshire with family and friends. Among his hobbies were cooking, boating, exercising and entertaining. He enjoyed trying new recipes and sharing them with everyone. We will all miss his experiments with different food types to sample.

He leaves behind his wife, Denise (Stone), daughter, Kerri and four brothers: Joseph, Stephen, Christopher and Marc.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, June 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. this evening.

Elizabeth Fiorentini

Generous To a Fault to Anyone in Need, She Lived a Long and Remarkable Life

Elizabeth (Puopolo) Fiorentini of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston, passed away on June 2 shortly before her 100th birthday.

Elizabeth lived a long and remarkable life and was truly beloved by all who knew her. She was generous to a fault to anyone in need. She found joy in hosting her loved ones in the sunlit kitchen of her Bennington Street home before moving to Winthrop where she enjoyed many happy days at the Parc at Harbor View Senior Living. Many of the best memories in Betty’s life were made at the family lake house in Amherst, New Hampshire, where she relished in watching her loved ones share the summer months together on Baboosic Lake. In the year that preceded her passing, Elizabeth and her family were miraculously returned the remains of her long lost brother Cpl. Joseph J. Puopolo, a Korean War POW.

Born in East Boston, the cherished daughter of the late Alessio and Anna Puopolo, Elizabeth was the beloved wife of the late Eugene A. Fiorentini, the devoted mother of Roseanne Graham and her husband, Alan, Jean Lewis and her husband, Arthur, all of Winthrop and her late cherished son Joseph Fiorentini. She was the adored grandmother of Gina DeNunzio of Winthrop, Mia Lombardi of Melrose, Richard Graham and Alan Graham II, both of Needham and the loving great-grandmother of Francesca and Gabriela DeNunzio of Winthrop, Avery Swinton of Melrose and Charles, William, Elizabeth, Desmond, Fiona and

Imogen Graham, all of Needham; the dear sister of the late Corporal Joseph J. Puopolo, Mary Mosca, Rose Vecchia, Emilio Puopolo and Nicholas Puopolo. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend appreciation to the Pace Program, The Parc at Harbor View Senior Living and Hospice Care Dimensions for the care they provided.

At the request of the family, Elizabeth’s funeral service will be private. Funeral arrangements  by Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop.

Michael J. ”Mike” Henry

May 15, 2023

On Saturday, June 3, close to 100 family and friends of Michael J “Mike” Henry gathered at the Brown Jug in Chelsea to say goodbye to our uncle, father, husband, friend and “Papa.” Michael J Henry Sr, recently a resident of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but formerly of Revere and Charlestown, who entered into eternal life suddenly on Monday May 15, 2023.​

He was 71 years of age.

Mike was born in Everett on June 29, 1951, a son of the late John W and Josephine (Frances) Henry. He grew up in Charlestown and graduated from Charlestown High School where he was a member of the Majestic Knights Marching Band.​

Following his graduation, he served in the United States Army before starting his career with US Airways where he worked for 35 years before his retirement.

Mike was the beloved husband of 34 years to Beverly (Bishop) Henry and the devoted father of Michael J. Henry, Jr and his companion Lynsey Gowens. He was also a proud “papa” to Michael J Henry III, Ezra Cantin, Chase and Ethan Gowens.

In life Mike was a generous and friendly man who was always willing to do anything to help a friend or family member in need. He will be remembered and missed by his loved ones.

Michael was the beloved brother of John W Henry, Jr and his wife, Elizabeth Kurkjian, Eileen (Henry) Ward and her husband, John, Daniel F Henry and his wife, Linda Leach.​

He was the proud uncle to Stephanie, Brian, Jake, Brittany, Daniel, Kayla and Conor on the Henry side of the family and to Joseph, Lori, Thomas, Kerri, Amy, David and Kathleen on the Bishop side of his family. He is also survived by many loving cousins and friends.

William Mack

Graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 2006

William E. Mack of Winthrop passed away at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston on June 5. He was 34 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved son of Cheryl (Marckini) and William Mack, he was a 2006 graduate of Winthrop High School.  At the time of his passing, he worked at a company that specialized in crating and shipping artwork. He was also a member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks.

He was the loving nephew of Deborah Jones of Peabody and Denise Gillespie of Revere; beloved cousin of Alicia Cifuni, John Cifuni, Janelle Murray, Sophie Paulson and Stephanie Gillespie and cherished grandson of Joan Mack.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Friday, June 9 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 12 Noon. Services will conclude with interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Joseph Macchiavelli, Sr.

Retired Hair Stylist

Joseph A. Macchiavelli, Sr. of Winthrop passed away at the High Point House in Haverhill on June 2. He was 81 years old.

Born in Messina, Sicily, Italy, he was the beloved son of the late Lina (Foti) and Arturo Macchiavelli. He came to this country at an early age residing in East Boston before moving to Winthrop over 54 years ago. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a hairstylist in Revere for many years where he was also the proprietor.

He was the devoted husband of Stella (Micciche) and the loving father of Anthony Macchiavelli of Rowley and the late Joseph A. Macchiavelli, Jr. He was the dear brother of Nick Macchiavelli and his wife, Josephine and their daughter, Lina of East Boston and the cherished grandfather of Chloe, Anthony and Patrick.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Sunday, June 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
