Return of the Winthrop Farmers Market

Dear Editor,

We are so excited to announce that the Winthrop Farmers Market is back this market season! After a four year hiatus, the market will return for nine markets in 2023 starting June 11th and ending on October 1st. The markets are occurring every other Sunday from 9:00AM to 1:00PM at Ingleside Park, along the Walden Street side.

We have dozens of vendors lined up this season with products to include produce, honey, seafood, pasta, ready to eat food, as well as a variety of crafters. The market attracts not only local vendors but farmers from all over the state.

Stop by the Winthrop Farmers Market table to say hi to our committee and ask any questions. We will be selling WFM merchandise this year to help support market sustainability, so be sure to stop by and be part of excitement!

For further information or questions about the market, vending, or sponsorship, please visit www.winthropfarmersmarket.com or connect with us on Facebook or Instagram.

We can’t wait to see you this season!

Winthrop Art Association Video Contest

Dear Editor,

The Winthrop Art Association offered the First Annual Video Contest for Winthrop residents ages 14-18. Rules for video submissions required that each video be between 10-20 seconds with the theme, Winthrop My Home Town. The Video Contest was created by Artist member, Joanne Schisler who contacted the Winthrop Public Schools for participation.  Brian Donnelly, High School Video Production Teacher supported this contest with a class project.  The Art Association was thrilled to receive over 30 entries from Winthrop High School students.  All entries were judged by Mike Cabral, Executive Director of Winthrop Cable Access Television (WCAT).  The Winthrop Art Association was pleased to announce that Winthrop High School freshmen, Chelsea Long, was the grand prize winner.  Second place went to Joshua Taylor and third place awardee was Owen Nargi.  We look forward to continuing the Video Contest in the future.

We look forward to future contests to encourage young artists to create their works and have an opportunity to present these creations to the public.  With recognition and support art thrives for young and old alike.

The Art Association also has a full schedule of events for the upcoming summer season.  Saturday Art in the Park will be held on June 17, July 15, August 19 and September 9 at Crest Avenue Park in Winthrop.  There will be tables for member artists and live music for this welcome summer event. We greatly appreciate all the support from the community and the Winthrop Cultural Council through the MA Cultural Council for making these events possible.

We welcome new members to the Winthrop Art Association. For information about these events and WAA, please email dawn6249@aol.com or by phone at 617.846.2644.

Not Seeking Re-Election

Dear Editor,

To the people of Precinct Six, the Town of Winthrop, and my Colleagues on the Winthrop Town Council,

After much contemplation and reflection, I have reached the conclusion that I will not be running for re-election at the end of this term. It has been an incredible honor to serve as the Precinct Six Councilor and I am grateful for the trust and support that the community and my colleagues have placed in me. During my tenure, I have had the opportunity to work with amazing individuals and contribute to the growth and progress of our Town.

However, as with any journey, there comes a time when one must evaluate their aspirations, priorities, and personal circumstances. It is with a heavy heart that I have come to the realization that it is time for me to step back from elected office and explore new avenues of service and personal, professional, and academic growth.

Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and I have given it considerable thought. My commitment to public service remains steadfast and I will remain an engaged member of our community and continue to contribute to its growth and wellbeing in other ways.

However, at this time, I believe that it is in the best interest of both myself and the community to pass the proverbial torch to another leader in our Precinct who can continue to build upon all that this Council has accomplished, and will accomplish throughout the remainder of 2023. As my term comes to a close, I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for my successor. I will be available to offer any assistance or guidance required during this period. It is my hope that by declaring my intentions at this time, other dedicated members of our community may begin to have discussions with their friends and families before we enter the official start of summer and emerge as viable candidates for this seat.

In closing, while there will be plenty of time for expressions of gratitude and appreciation at a later date, I would be remiss if I did not thank my Mom, Martha, my Dad, Stephen Sr., my grandfather, Frank, and my grandmother, Violente, for their unwavering love and support.

Sincerely,

Stephen Ruggiero

Town Council Vice President – Precinct 6
