Bobby Gillis Remembered at Town Council Meeting

By Adam Swift

Robert “Bobby” Gillis, a 1982 graduate of Winthrop High School, member of the town’s historical commission, and noted town historian, was honored with a moment of silence before Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting.

Gillis died on Tuesday, according to Council President James Letterie.

“The town lost a kind, gentle man who was loved by all,” said Letterie. “Bobby symbolized everything that was good about Winthrop, and he was always caring, kind, and compassionate. Bobby has been known as the mayor, our town historian to many, but a friend to all.”

Letterie said Gillis almost single handedly kept the history of Winthrop alive.

“If you needed a picture from the town, any part of town, any period in time, you would go to Bobby,” he said. “Unlike others in this day and age, Bobby always used technology for good. He would post great photos and rekindle great memories for lots of people. Bobby also did so much for his beloved Winthrop High School Class of ‘82, as well as many other past classes.”

Letterie noted that Gillis also worked many elections for the Town Clerk.

“To say he will be missed is a gross understatement,” said Letterie.
