Heinonen Seeks School Commitee Seat

Celeste Heinonen has announced her candidacy for School Committee. The following is her statement.

Hello, my name is Celeste Heinonen.  I am running for School Committee, and ask for your vote on November 2nd.

More about myself – I am a long-time Winthrop resident.  I am a proud alumni of our public schools, having started as a ‘Dalrymple kid’ and then graduating Winthrop High School, Class of 1999.  My husband, not originally from Winthrop, never questioned the decision to move here 10 years ago.  We are now raising our 3 children in Winthrop – my oldest son and daughter are students at Gordon Fort Banks Elementary School, while my youngest son isn’t far behind.

I have an undergraduate degree from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, having studied Human Development and Secondary Education.  I also have a  Masters of Business Administration from Suffolk University.  My career began as a Program Administrator in school age childcare at the YMCA of Greater Boston, and has led me to my current role as Finance Manager.  While professionally I’ve been taken in another direction, I have never lost sight of the importance of education.  I welcome this opportunity to contribute to the learning community once again.

Most importantly, though, I am a parent.  I am committed to doing what is best for my children.  As a school committee member, I will treat each child as if they were my own.  My intent is to give the parents in the community a voice when it comes to our children’s education.  I know we have all been frustrated over the last few years, and rightfully so.  But I believe in the Winthrop Public Schools – I wouldn’t be raising my children here if I didn’t.  With our beautiful facilities and dedicated staff, we have all the tools we need to give every child a great education.  I want to help make that happen.

And finally, I promise I will try my hardest to do something – anything Ð about “The Loop”.
