Thank You, Chief Flanagan

The recent retirement of Fire Chief Paul Flanagan marks the end of an era in the Winthrop Fire Department.

Chief Flanagan served with the Fire Dept. for almost 43 years and served as chief since 2008. In addition, his family’s service in the Winthrop Fire Dept. extends more than 100 years, beginning with his grandfather in 1904. Paul Flanagan’s dad, the late Charles Flanagan, served in the department for more than 40 years, culminating with his appointment as chief, a post from which he retired in 1990.

Paul Flanagan’s brother, Chuck, served alongside his brother for decades until his retirement in 2018 with the rank of captain.

However, beyond extending his family’s legacy, Paul Flanagan’s tenure as chief will be remembered for his zeal in bringing the Winthrop Fire Dept. up to the standards of the 21st century.

Paul Flanagan epitomized the definition of a true public servant who dedicated his life to protecting the people of our community.

We know we join with all of our fellow residents in thanking Paul Flanagan for his four decades of service and wishing him the best in his retirement.
