WHS Girls Soccer Team Celebrates Senior Night With 3-0 Win Over Revere

The Winthrop High girls soccer team celebrated Senior Night in appropriate fashion last Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Revere at Miller Field.

After a scoreless duel through the first 40 minutes of play, the Lady Vikings broke the deadlock shortly into the second half thanks to a goal by senior captain and all-time Winthrop goal scorer Maura Dorr, who was assisted by her fellow captain and twin sister, Jenna.

Junior Stefania Spinazzola then reached the back of the Revere net off a corner kick that was delivered by fellow junior Mia Martucci, who earned an assist, to make it 2-0.

Senior captain Grace Galuris, assisted by Grace Arena, gave Winthrop an added insurance goal for the 3-0 finale.

“Our senior captains, Maura Dorr, Jenna Dorr, Grace Galuris, and Lily Skomro, have been through a lot this year and have been nothing but great leaders,” said WHS head coach Tracey Martucci of the quartet who were recognized for their contributions to the girls’ soccer program during the Senior Night festivities. “They always are positive and have been a great help to the coaches. They are going to be missed next year.”

This past Monday Martucci and her crew hosted Nashoba Tech and cruised to a 6-0 triumph.

The Lady Vikings jumped out to a quick start, reaching the back of the Nashoba net on four occasions to take a 4-0 lead at the half.

Maura Dorr added to her all-time school record total with a pair of goals. Emma Forsyth and Nora McCarey earned assists. Grace Arena, assisted by Maura Dorr, and Maddie Stiglets, assisted by Spinazzola, also scored before the intermission.

In the second half, Mia Martucci, assisted by Maura Dorr, increased the Lady Vikings’ advantage to 5-0. Winthrop then switched-up its formation to allow the defenders to move up to the forward positions. Jenna Dorr scored the last goal of the game, assisted by Skomro, for the 6-0 finale.

Last week the Lady Vikings defeated Northeast Regional, 3-1. Maura Dorr scored two goals in the opening half, with Martucci earning an assist on one of them. 

The Lady Golden Knights closed the gap to 2-1, but Martucci found the back of the Northeast net to put the game away.

The Lady Vikings, who have compiled a sterling 10-1-1 record this spring, were scheduled to wrap up their pandemic-shortened Fall II season yesterday (Wednesday) with a long trek to the hinterlands of Rt. 495 in Westford to meet Nashoba.

WHS Boys Soccer Team Tops Nashoba

The Winthrop High boys soccer team made the long bus ride to Westford on Patriots Day morning a happy one with a 4-2 triumph over Nashoba Tech.

The Vikings took control of the contest from the outset, jumping out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half. 

John Langone, assisted by Esteban Alvarez, put Winthrop on the board and Juan Guauque, assisted by Alvarez again, made it 2-0, before Nashoba responded to leave matters at 2-1 at the half.

Nashoba continued to maintain the momentum after the intermission, bringing the contest back to level at 2-2 shortly after the second half kick-off.

However, the Vikings picked up the play and regained the lead thanks to a goal by Loert Mana, assisted by Thomas Navarro.

Winthrop then added an insurance tally with 15 minutes remaining when Luke Riley reached the back of the Nashoba net, assisted by Mana. 

“Overall, it was a great team win,” said WHS head coach Kyle Gagin, whose squad now stands at 7-3-2 for their pandemic-shortened season. “Everyone did their part to win the game.”

The Vikings were scheduled to wrap up their Fall II campaign last night (Wednesday) with a visit from Nashoba that will be highlighted by Senior Night festivities.
