Congratulations, WHS Gymnastics Team

This has been a strange time for all of us amidst the pandemic, as we await our vaccinations that hopefully will allow us to return to normal life (whatever that may be).

For those of us who are older, we especially feel for our young people, whose education and lives have been so cruelly disrupted by COVID-19.

Although most Winthrop High athletes have been allowed to resume their activities to a large extent, things still aren’t quite the same.

So it was with great admiration that we learned of the achievement of the 2021 Winthrop High gymnastics team in establishing a new school record for points in a single meet.

The team, which is headed by co-coaches Peter Gobiel and Daria Millerick, had set that as their goal at the start of the season and they accomplished it in their second to last meet of 2021.

The previous mark of 141.4 points had stood for a decade until the current crew of Lady Vikings bettered that by a mere one-tenth of a point with a score of 141.5 in their meet with Danvers this past Sunday.

We’re sure this is especially gratifying for each of these young ladies because gymnastics is an endeavor that requires immense dedication, perseverance, and hard work from an early age.

We know we join with all of our readers in congratulating coaches Gobiel and Millerick and their team upon this achievement, which is all the more noteworthy because of the unique circumstances of the winter of 2021 in which it was accomplished.
