Honoring the Top 10% of the Winthrop High School Class of 2020

This year’s graduating seniors will likely have very different memories than seniors of years past. One of those memories is the annual Top 10% Breakfast, which honors the top ten percent of each high school class. The event applauds those students who achieved academic excellence, positioning themselves as leaders of their class. In what is considered one of Winthrop High School’s traditional annual events, this year, recipients had to forego the celebration that was scheduled for May 9th, and receive their accolades in a different way. Here are the top ten percent of the senior class:

#1 Elizabeth Collins

This senior is a four-year member and captain of the varsity sailing team. She is a 2-year member of the National Honor Society and was elected as treasurer. She co-founded the FIRST Robotics team, Norse Code, in 2018 and has served as co-president for the last two years. She is a 3-year member of the STEM Club, a 3-year member of the Art Club, and a 2-year member of the Math Club. She was a 1-year volunteer at Piers Park Sailing Center and now works there every summer as a sailing instructor. She has received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school. Elizabeth Collins, daughter of Jacqueline and Vincent Collins will be attending Northeastern University in the fall to study Mechanical Engineering.

 #2 Trinity Rist

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society. She is a first degree black belt and an 8-year member of Cervizzi’s Martial Arts Academy. She was the co-founder and co-president of the Winthrop Robotics Team and a 4-year member and co-president of the STEM club. She was a 2-year member and president of the math club and a 2-year member of the game club. She served as an intern in Northeastern University’s Robotics Lab the summer before her senior year. She has received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school. Trinity Rist, daughter of Tracy and Eric Rist, will be attending Northeastern University’s Honors Program in the fall to study electrical and computer engineering.

 #3 Khalil Mimouni

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a two year member of the Winthrop High School soccer team. He was a two year member of the math club and has received the Undergraduates Award for the Highest Accumulative Math Score. He has also received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school. Khalil Mimouni, son of Fatima Zohra and Mohammed Mimouni will be attending University of Massachusetts Boston in the fall to study Chemistry-Pre Med.

 #4 Maria Tracy

This senior is a two year member and one year President of the National Honor Society and a 5 years member of the soccer team. She was a 5 year member of Winthrop High School Drama Society performing in 15 shows winning Two state championships and earning 5 Allstar Company Awards. She was a three year member of the Mock Trial team and served as captain for one year, she was a two year member of the Quiz Bowl Team. She received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school and was the recipient of the Wellesley College Book Award. Maria Tracy, daughter of Gregory and Donis Tracy will be attending Tufts University in the fall to study Biology.

 #5 Patrick Haskell

This senior is a 4-year member of the varsity Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track teams and senior captain of all three sports. He is a 4-year member of the Student Council, serving as class Vice President, NEMASC delegate, NEMASC Vice President, and Student Council President while on the board. He is a two-year member of the Drama Society, National Honor Society, and School Site Council. He also serves as Vice President of Winthrop High School’s first Best Buddies International chapter at WHS. He received the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Award his junior year and was awarded a NEC Scholar Athlete his senior year. He has received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school. Patrick Haskell, son of Leo and Julie Haskell, will be attending the University of Miami in the fall to study Biology.

 #6 Salvatore Campo

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a member of Track and field during his Sophomore year, and member of the Tennis team his Junior year. He is also a member of the Viking Longship Project, Model United Nations Club, and the Math club. During his Junior year he served as class Treasurer and winner of the Winthrop High School Science Fair. In his senior Year he served as Commissioner for the Model United Nations Club. He has received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school and was the recipient of the Suffolk University Book award his Junior Year. Salvatore Campo Jr., son of Marcia and Salvatore Campo will be attending Northeastern in the fall to study Computer Engineering.

 #7 Joseph Mahoney

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a four year member of the varsity lacrosse team. He was a two year member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams. He served as Class President sophomore and junior year and participated in student council all four years. He volunteered for two years at the just write it writing course and has received the Presidents Award freshman junior and senior year. Joe Mahoney, son of Matthew Mahoney and Mary Ann Lowney, will be attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison in the fall.

 #8 Ella McCarey

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honors Society, a 3-year member of the varsity soccer team and Drama Society, 2-year member of the track team, and 2-year captain of the sailing team. She has danced at WSPA for 14 years and has been an active member of the Winthrop Frostbiters’ Sailing Association, regular volunteer with the Winthrop Youth Soccer Program, sailing instructor at CPYC, and employee of Shirley Hardware. She has received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of High School. Ella McCarey, daughter of Kathleen and Robert McCarey will be attending Hofstra University in the fall studying Biomedical Engineering.

 #9 Isabel Skomro

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and was Vice President of NHS her senior year. She was a 4-year member of the soccer team and indoor track team and 3-year member of the outdoor track team. She was captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams her senior year. She was a 4-year member of the social committee and the mock trial team, as well as mock trial captain her senior year. She was a member of the organization Our Climate. She is a long-time Winthrop Youth Soccer referee and coach. She has received the President’s Education Award all 4 years of high school. Isabel Skomro, daughter of Carina Campobasso and Gary Skomro, will be attending Harvard in the fall to study Government.

 #10 Olivia Driscoll

This senior is a two year member of the National Honor Society, serving as the secretary for her senior year, and a 4 year member of the varsity cheerleading, ice hockey, and tennis teams, serving as a 3 sport captain during her senior year. She is a 4 year member of the student council, social committee and executive board, serving as the publicity coordinator. She served as the class secretary for all 4 years. Olivia Driscoll, daughter of Sean and Cindy Driscoll will be attending Clemson University in the fall to study psychology on a Speech Language Pathology path.

 #11 Jared Vecchio

This senior isa two-year member of the National Honor Society and a 3 year member of the Hockey and Tennis teams. He received the President’s Education Award 3 years of High School. Jared Vecchio, son of Joseph and Danielle Vecchio will be attending UMASS Amherst in the fall to study Computer Science.

 #12 Clare Nargi

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a four-year member of the varsity indoor and outdoor track teams and was named captain her senior year. She has regularly volunteered at Winthrop Town Hall and at Woburn Nursing Center. She is also a valued employee at the 21st Century After School Program. She has received the President’s Education Award all four years of high school. Clare Nargi, daughter of Irene and John Nargi, will be attending WPI in the fall to study biology and biotechnology.

#13 Mary Lawlor

This senior is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a 3-year member of the varsity swim team and captain in her senior year. She was a 3-year volunteer at the Woburn Nursing Center and 2-year lifeguard at Harvard Aquatics. Mary Lawlor, daughter of Terrance and Katherine Lawlor, will be attending University of California, Davis in the fall to study psychology.

#14 Sage D’Amelio

This senior is a 2-year member of the National Honor Society and a 4-year member of the Varsity Gymnastics and Tennis teams, as well as senior captain of both. She is a 4-year member of the student council serving as Executive Board secretary her senior year. She is also a 4-year member of student government serving as class videographer all four years. She has been a 3-year member of the yearbook club as head editor. She has received the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship as well as undergraduate awards for her academic achievements in digital media and photography and graphic design. She is a 2-year recipient of the President’s Education Award. Sage D’Amelio, daughter of Michele and Rich D’Amelio will be attending Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst in the fall to study Marketing.
