Naomi Poverman

Past President of Emeth Chapter B’nai Brith Women and Past Treasurer of former Temple B’nai Israel in Revere

Naomi J. Poverman of Auburn, ME, formerly of Winthrop, died Monday, April 20 at the Clover Manor in Auburn.

Born in Winthrop, the daughter of the late Barney and Esther Poverman, she was raised and educated in Winthrop and a graduate of Winthrop High School. She continued her education graduating from Bentley College and worked as an accountant.

She was Past President of the Emeth Chapter B’nai Brith Women and past treasurer of the former Temple B’nai Israel in Revere.

Naomi is survived by her nephews Michael Levy of San Francisco, CA, Steven Levy of Marlboro, Alan Freehoff of Attleboro and her niece, Ellen Freehoff of Rumford, ME. She was the loving great aunt of Brittany, Shawn, Rebecca, Ashley, Tabitha, Christopher and Luke. She was predeceased by her sisters Ruth Freehoff and Frances Levy and her niece, Leona Sinclair.

Private graveside services due to COVID-19 were held at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. Adolph ‘Eddie’ Abate & Lucille Abate

Husband and Wife taken by the COVID-19 Coronavirus

Services for Adolph E. “Eddie” Abate, 91, of Winthrop, formerly of Orient Heights East Boston were held privately with those for his wife, Lucille A. (Viola) Abate, 80, under the care and direction of the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, Revere.

Eddie passed away on April 8 at the Massachusetts General Hospital, his wife Lucille, 80, passed one week later on April 15 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Boston, both taken from the COVID – 19 Coronavirus.

The couple shared 35 years of marriage together. They lived in Orient Heights in East Boston for many years, before moving to Winthrop in 2007. During their retirement they enjoyed dining out and wintering in Florida. They always cherished being surrounded with family and friends.

Eddie was born and raised in East Boston and was educated in Boston Public Schools. He had two children, Candis and Thomas Abate. He was a hardworking man who held several jobs throughout his life, He loved to swim and was very well known at the Boston Fish Pier where he worked for most of his life. Later in life, he worked as a shuttle bus driver for Budget Rent A Car.

He was the devoted husband of 35 years of Lucille A. (Viola) Abate; the loving father of Dr. Thomas Abate and his wife, Fengqun Luo of Revere and the late Candis A. Casaletto; beloved grandfather of Keith Abate of New Hampshire and Taylor Ciampa and her husband, Dennis of Salem; grandfather of Victoria, Nicole, Natalia, Grayson and Devon Ciampa; dear brother of the late Alfred, Alvino, Norma, Carl and Jennie Abate; cherished uncle of Cheryl A. Vargus, Charles J. Green, Kenneth W. Green, all of Revere and the late David W. Green; grand uncle of Tiffany and Chloe Green, both of Revere and several other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Lucille was 80 years old and was born and raised in East Boston. She was a graduate of East Boston High School, Class of 1957. Lucille worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Department of Revenue Division for over 25 years, first in Boston and later in Chelsea. An avid shopper, her family recounts that Lucille would enjoy shopping for anything, but especially clothing.

She was the devoted wife of 35 years of the late Adolph E. “Eddie” Abate; the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Phyllis (Delavora) Viola; dear stepmother of Dr. Thomas Abate and his wife, Fengqun Luo of Revere and the late Candis A. Casaletto; cherished sister of Philip J. Viola of Winthrop, Marie Graziano and her late husband, William of Revere and the late Jean R. Scarino and her late husband, Raymond Scarino; adored aunt of Cheryl A. Vargus, Charles J. Green, Kenneth W. Green, all of Revere and the late David W. Green; grand aunt of Tiffany and Chloe Green, both of Revere. 

Interment was in Winthrop Cemetery, Belle Isle section, Winthrop,

Charles Santoianni

Avid Keno Player and Suffolk Downs Devotee

Charles A. Santoianni of Winthrop, formerly of Revere and East Boston, passed away on April 18.

A US Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict, Charles was an avid Keno player at many establishments in Revere and was a frequent visitor at the Suffolk Downs Race track. May he rest in peace.

He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (McBeth); companion of the late Katherine Gleason; loving father of Susan Giarratani and her husband, Robert of Winthrop and Tonimarie Hanton and her husband, Joseph of Methuen; dear brother of Robert Santoianni and his wife, Elaine of Peabody. He is also survived by four loving grandchildren: Samantha, Joseph, Robert Alexander and Jamie and one loving great grandchild, Michael James as well as many nieces and nephews. 

In accordance with the CDC, Mass. Department of Public Health, Archdiocese of Boston guidelines and local restrictions on gatherings and congregations due to COVID-19, all services will be held for the immediate family privately. Ernest Lessard

Long Active in the Winthrop Community

Ernest A. Lessard of Winthrop passed away at the Eastpointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chelsea on April 14, 2020. He was 90 years old.

Born in Boston, the beloved son of the late Martha and Armond Lessard, he was a lifelong resident of Winthrop and was employed with Massachusetts Electric for over 42 years. He was a life member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks, a member of the Holy Name Society Bowling League, Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop Cemetery Commissioner, School Building Committee, Council Member and van driver for the Council of Aging and a member of the Winthrop Hospital Board.

Our father was a kind and loving man. He was a friend to everyone he met. He was so in love with our mother until her last breath two years ago. Our family was blessed by God to have him as our father.

He was the devoted husband of the late Muriel (Fredericks) and the loving father of David and Karen Lessard, Mary and Charles McGrail, Richard and Jane Lessard, Kathryn and Robert Dixon, Nancy and Patrick Feeley, Linda and Mark Sirois and Donna and Chester Farland; dear brother of Jeanette Schultz and the late Robert Lessard, Cecile Tillinghast and Germaine Cunningham. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Interment in Winthrop Cemetery was private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Doris S. K. Murachver

Lifelong Supporter of Many Liberal Causes and First Female MDC Lifeguard

Doris “Dodo” S. (Kaplan) Murachver of Winthrop and Newton, entered into rest on April 17.

Dodo was a graduate of Winthrop High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Boston University. During World War II she became one of the first female lifeguards for the Metropolitan District Commission, walking Winthrop Beach with her whistle in hand. Dodo was a life-long learner. She attended adult education classes throughout her life, was an avid reader and served numerous terms as a member of the Winthrop Public Library Board of Trustees.  She especially enjoyed reading the New Yorker magazine.  Dodo followed politics closely and was always happy to give you her opinion on current events. She was a supporter of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts and gave her time as a volunteer there.  She proudly supported many liberal causes throughout her life.

She was the beloved wife of the late Sidney A. Murachver, devoted mother of David and Ellen Murachver of Framingham, Joanne Murachver and Craig Leiding of Arlington, Virginia, and Roberta and Hillel Skoff of Brookline; sister of Leonard Kaplan of Peabody; cherished grandmother of Andrew and Kimberly Murachver of Westford, Russell and Lindsay Murachver of Charlestown and Molly and Hannah Skoff of Brookline and cherished great-grandmother of Liv and Miles.

Services and Shiva will be private due to the current shelter in place policy. Philip Cannata

Family Was Most Important to him

Philip J. Cannata of Winthrop passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on April 19. He was 95 years old. Born in Boston, the beloved son of the late Jennie (Rabita) and John Cannata.

A resident of Winthrop for over 60 years, he served proudly in the US Army during the Korean War reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he went on to work as a sheet metal worker at C.P. Blouin.

He was one of the kindest men we ever knew, always so genuine in his interest in what you were doing, always offering a warm embrace and a loving smile. Family was the most important to him whether a small family gathering or a large Fourth of July party. For over 50 years, he and his wife would meet friends every Saturday night at Prince Pizza in Saugus.

He was the devoted husband for 63 years of Rose (Falzarano), the loving father of John P. Cannata and his wife, Deborah of Peabody and Philip C. Cannata and his partner, Marcio Correia of Florida; dear brother of Jeanette Gillen of Winthrop and the late Mary Consolo, Vincenzina Ruggiero, Lucy LaMattina and Charles Cannata and the cherished grandfather of Matthew J. Cannata. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery are private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make an act of kindness in Philip’s memory.

Retired Proprietor of Betty’s Beauty Shop in Winthrop

Antoinette Passaro of Revere, formerly of Winthrop, passed away at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston on April 18. She was 83 years old.

Born in Salerno, Italy, the beloved daughter of the late Ida (Giordano) and Luigi Cinelli, prior to her retirement, she was the proprietor of Betty’s Beauty Salon in Winthrop.

She was the devoted wife of the late William C. Passaro and the loving mother of John Passaro of Florida and William Passaro and his wife, Deborah of Winthrop; dear sister of Elizabeth Marano of Somerville, Nick Cinelli of Florida and the late Carmella Migliore and Barbara Nese; cherished grandmother of Jillian, Michael, Gianna and Christian; great grandmother of Novalee and former mother in law of Mande Passaro. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

David A. Moretti of Winthrop died on April 20,

He was the beloved son of the late Nello and Antonetta (Marmorale) Moretti, loving brother of the late Therese Moretti and is survived by an uncle, Marcello Moretti and many cousins.

Services are private and are being handled by the DeVito Funeral Home of Watertown.

Karen Shell

Worked for First National and State Banks

Karen M. Shell of Pond St., Winthrop passed away at the High Point House in Haverhill on April 18. She was 76 years old. Born in Winthrop, the beloved daughter of the late Virginia (Ciampa) and Warren Clifford, she was a life long resident of Winthrop and was employed in the computer department for First National Bank and State Street Bank.

She was the devoted wife of 56 years of William H. Shell and the loving mother of Laurie DePina of Mashpee, the dear sister of Warren Clifford and Frank Clifford, both of Winthrop and the cherished grandmother of Kayleigh and Vincent.

Nancy Shea

Worked at Winthrop Center CVS for 21 Years

Nancy K. Shea of Falmouth, formerly of Winthrop, passed away at the CareOne at Newton on April 18. She was 90 years old.

Born in South Portland, Maine, she was the beloved daughter of the late Mary (Flaherty) and Fred C. Lane. She was employed for over 21 years at the CVS in Winthrop Center. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was the devoted wife of the late Joseph Shea and the loving mother of Susan Eccles of Winthrop, Catherine E. Gallivan and her late husband James R. of Winthrop, Scott C. Eccles and his wife, Donna of Boynton Beach, Florida and Lisa Creamer and her late husband, James of Wakefield; cherished grandmother of Mary Kate and Kas Simpson, Ryan Gallivan, Rory and Jillian Gallivan, Jennifer Creamer and Stephen Creamer. She is also survived by four adored great grandchildren.

Services and interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne are private.
