WHS Softball Team Opens Season Wednesday

The Winthrop High softball team will open its season next Wednesday (April 10) when the Lady Vikings travel to Mt. Alvernia.

“We’re looking to have a good season,” said WHS head coach Dave Guffey, whose 2019 squad will be led by senior captains Bella Perrotti and Stephanie Strangie.

Other members of the varsity include senior Cali Peterson; juniors Ashley McGonagle and Nicole Newman; sophomores Sofia Vitale, Nelly Carter, Brooke Costin, Katie Gagnon, Rachel Farley, Syd Crotty, and Taylan Portait;  freshmen Ava Martello, Summer Talent, Juliana Guzman, and Leah Espinal; eighth graders McKenzie Margardo, Gabby Golden, Gia Bakos, Olivia McManus, Samantha Harrison, Bridget Hickey, and Kathie Maturo; and seventh grader Adrianna Rizzarro.

“We have a great attitude and I think we will do well his year in a tough league,” noted Guffey. The NEC re-aligned into two, eight-team divisions for 2019, with the Lady Vikings being placed with Marblehead, Swampscott, Saugus, Gloucester, Salem, Peabody, Danvers, and Beverly.

Guffey and his crew have had a busy pre-season. Winthrop captured a 4-3 win over Manchester-Essex in which Rachel Farley drove in the winning run and Sofia Vitale pitched well.

The Lady Vikings participated in the annual pre-season jamboree on Cape Cod and engaged in contests with Mashpee, Sunapee, Bay Path, Concord, Nantucket, and Nauset.

“We moved people around to see lots of position and get some ideas,” said Guffey. Steph Strangie pitched well in the tournament and Katie Gagnon, Bella Perrotti, and Brooke Costin shone at the plate.

After Wednesday’s contest at Mt. Alvernia, the Lady Vikings will host Wakefield next Friday in their home opener.
