We congratulate the Winthrop High School Class of 2017 on receiving their diplomas at the very impressive graduation exercises held June 2 inside the new school gymnasium.
The class of 108 graduates became the first class to graduate from the brand new high school and have their graduation in the gymnasium and live-streamed to the Neil Shapiro Theater.
During the construction of the new school, this class and other students were relocated to the old Middle School. They handled the transition to the new building admirably, knowing that a bright, state-of-the-art high school building would soon be here. And the seniors certainly had a great year of academic and athletic experiences in the new school building that is one of the best in the region.
The graduation ceremony featured a first: twins Haley Holden and William Holden delivered the valedictory and salutatory addresses respectively. The class, led by president Madelyn Fainga’a and advisors Tracie Turransky and Kate Kelly, certainly achieved well in the classroom, in extracurricular activities such as drama, and on the sports field.
The ceremony was one of mixed emotions for Supt. of Schools John Macero, who has done an exceptional job leading our school district. Through his leadership, the transition to the new middle/high school buildings went smoothly and he appreciated the students understanding the temporary inconvenience of relocating to the old building. Macero can look back proudly of his productive tenure as superintendent.
The juniors (Class of 2018) now become the school leaders and we know that they have learned from the fine example set by the graduates. Principal Matt Crombie is ready to lead the high school to even greater heights.
