A Winthrop boys basketball coach and police officer is being investigated following a complaint from a female student for alleged “inappropriate conduct.”

As of press time, coach and Winthrop Police Officer Ignacio Oyola, 39, is still working for the police department during the investigation of the complaint. The boys basketball season had finished its season for the year. Oyola has coached them for the last two years and prior to that was the girls basketball coach.

Police Chief Terence Delehanty said Superintendent of Schools John Macero received an anonymous email on Feb. 15 regarding the coach and his alleged behavior with a female student. The investigation was immediately turned over to the Suffolk County District Attorneys office.

Macero would not comment on the situation only to say, “this involves a personnel matter and the Winthrop School Department does not comment publicly on personnel issues involving current or former employees.

Delehanty said they are still reviewing the information from the investigation in the school department and the district attorneys office. After that he will determine if any rules and regulations within the police department have been violated.

Oyola, who has been a Winthrop police officer since 1998, is married and has children.
