Honoring President John F. Kennedy

Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo and other state leaders have kicked off a year-long centennial celebration in honor of former President John F. Kennedy, who was born on May 29, 1917. President Kennedy was struck down by an assassin’s bullet on Nov. 22, 1963. Some of us in Wnthrop, like our esteemed publisher emeritus Andrew P. Quigley – who was a senator, state representative and mayor of Chelsea – were close friends of the former President and his family. It was sad day for all across the country when the young and charismatic Kennedy’s life ended so suddenly in Dallas.

Said Speaker DeLeo, “President Kennedy had a unique ability to translate the majesty of grand ideas into pragmatic policies that bettered the lives of millions. That’s why his legacy resonates with so many people, of such diverse backgrounds. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that we reaffirm ourselves to the values that President Kennedy held dear, values that have Massachusetts a bastion of equality and liberty.”

We hope residents will participate in the centennial activities that are honoring our native son and 35th President of the United States.
