We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to former Winthrop High School Director of Athletics Jim Evans, who sustained injuries after being struck by a car during a stop in Virginia. Jim was traveling to Florida and stopped in Virginia for a break.
As we’ve said in the past, Jim Evans was a pioneer in Winthrop High girls sports, recognizing that girls wanted to participate in sports (following the historic passage of Title IX) and they deserved every opportunity to do so. Winthrop’s excellent sports program for girls allowed such superb athletes such as Sue Goldstein Freedland, Dana Stone, Lisa Monteleone Ferrara, Sharon Belliveau Sicurella, Erica Towlson, Maureen McManus Hill, Amy Sullivan, Joan Matsumoto, Lisa Gill Howard, Tracy Gigliello Martucci p- not to mention the Lally, Kneeland, and Doherty girls — and so many others  to excel at Winthrop High School and continue their careers in college.
We wish Jim Evans the best and are pleased to let him know that the community appreciates all he did for our town and its student-athletes.
