Former A.D. Jim Evans Delivers Eloquent Speech

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the presence of former Winthrop High School Director of Athletics Jim Evans at the Hall of Fame Banquet. It was so heartening to hear the female inductees credit Mr. Evans for his role in not only establishing girls’ sports at the high school, but also helping those programs grow and prosper and enhance Winthrop’s reputation as a girls and boys athletic powerhouse.

Evans introduced former WHS girls track Larry Keegan, who won 17 NEC titles.

Evans truly was a pioneer in high school sports, fully supporting all girls sports and making sure that female athletes were given every opportunity to excel. And when you think of the great female athletes who competed during Mr. Evans’s reign as AD — Sharon Belliveau Sicurella, Lisa Monteleone Ferrara, Susan Goldstein Freedland, Maureen McManus Hill, Dana Stone, Helen Balaouras, Erica Towlson, Trisha McGee, Holly Hill Morry, and Mary Murphy Raymond (who were inducted Saturday night) — and so many others who followed in the program, one realizes what a great accomplishment Mr. Evans helped to achieve in making female sports at Winthrop such a success.

Thank you, Jim Evans, for being an outstanding administrator and opening the door for the many female athletes who have led our school to such lofty heights.
