Winthrop’s hometown candidate, Joseph Boncore, did it!
For the first time in our town’s 164 year history, a Winthrop resident will serve in the Massachusetts State Senate.
Long-time residents may recall that the Sun-Transcript’s late publisher, Andrew P. Quigley, served in the Senate from 1950-56, but he was only a summer resident (his family had a house on Pt. Shirley for many years) and he himself always resided in Chelsea.
So it is with pardonable pride that we join with all of our fellow residents in exulting in Joseph Boncore’s victory in the Democratic primary Tuesday, which is tantamount to election because there is no Republican candidate who will appear on the ballot in the upcoming final election.
Joe ran a tremendous campaign that focused on important issues and his vision for the future.He received incredible support from Winthrop residents — Joe received 2,200 votes in the town and bested opponents by margins of 6-1 in some town precincts.
However, he also displayed popularity across the district, where his message of optimism and helping all generations resonated with voters across the political spectrum.
Moreover, Joe showed displayed a tremendous knowledge of the issues and problems — education, the opioid crisis, public safety, and pay equality for all — that are facing the Commonwealth and the nation. Joe Boncore impressed everyone he met on the campaign trail. Voters universally acknowledged both his intelligence and his sincerity in his desire to make our state a better place to live for all residents.
Moreover, Joe displayed his expertise in knowing exactly what the day-to-day role of a state senator entails, a trait that the voters recognized will help him hit the ground running from his first day on the job.
His dad, Winthrop Town Councilor-at-Large Phil Boncore, was the proudest man in the room at the victory party at the Lodge of Elks. A dedicated town official for so many years, a highly-respected attorney, and the leader of a great Winthrop family, Phil worked hard to provide invaluable help to his son’s successful campaign for this prestigious position in state government.
We have no doubt that Joe Boncore will represent Winthrop and all of his district very well in the State Senate.
We know we join with all of our fellow residents in congratulating Joe Boncore on this most impressive victory and in pledging our support to make his tenure in the Massachusetts State Senate a long and successful one.
